Toddlers: 24 Months+

Don't know what to do....

My baby is 2 years 4 months old and I have been trying to sit her on her little potty for months and she will sit on it if she has her pants and diaper on or her pull up, but it you pull her diaper or pull up down and try and sit her on it, she screams and will jump off the seat right away....I don't know what to do, is this normal?  I am very frustrated.

Re: Don't know what to do....

  • stop having her sit on the potty let her do it on her terms more than likely she is not ready my DD is 2 and 1/2 and is not ready so why push it. Some days she does not want to do it.   I let DD go naked in the bathroom before bath time and I go to the bathroom and she normally mimics me.  I am hoping she is ready in Oct. because I have 5 days off in a row, if not then we will try in a couple months after that.  I am not pressed about it

  • Don't be..she just might not be ready.

Is it a big toilet?  Have you tried a kiddo potty?  My DS didn't like the little toilet, he's all about being "big".. but others like the small one.  Make a big deal out of getting one.

Does she go to preschool or DC where she can see other kids doing it?

I love preschool, its making training so much easier.

  • I would leave it alone for awhile and try again in a few months. Whenever DS resisted anything potty related I dropped the whole thing and tried again later.
  • DD did this.  She wasn't ready.  I backed off and tried again a month later and now she'll sit.

  • I agree with the other responses. Just give up on the potty situation for a month or so. If she asks to sit, have her sit in whatever way she is most comfortable, but don't force the issue. It's ok if she doesn't potty train now. There are plenty of kids out there that are much closer or even actually 3 years old before they potty train.
