So, those of you that have kindles or nooks, what are you reading? I'm looking for something new to read.
Also, where do you get your books? Do you buy lots of books? Library? subscription service? Our local library has a service but the selection is really terrible and then anything good has huge waiting lists. I have been thinking of doing Amazon Prime because I think we would get our money's worth but wanted to see what others are doing.
Re: Kindle books
My library selection has gotten pretty good- not great, but enough that I find a book once in awhile. It forces me to read stuff I wouldn't normally pick out.
My favorite book ever is Glass Castle- I recently read "Breaking Dawn" which was recommended if you like Glass Castle. It's a true life "homeless to Harvard" autobiography. It was much harder to read than Glass Castle, but still really good. I also love Augusten Burroughs (Running With Scissors is his most famous). His followup memoir Dry is another favorite of mine that I re-read all the time. I'm addicted to nonfiction if you can't tell!
I read a ton, and while I love my kindle, I couldn't afford to buy their books all the time and my guilty pleasure are used books. I have a thrift shop that I regularly go to with amazing selection that is dirt cheap ($1-$2 new releases). I re-read books frequently so I like owning them- but storage is a problem!
Have you scanned through the gagillion free books for the kindle? All of the classics are on there. I'm using the opportunity to catch up on all the classics that people talk about/reference all the time but that I haven't read yet b/c I've been too busy re-reading Jane Austen.
I also plan on re-reading Jane Austen.
I tend to mix it up but get them all from Amazon. I try to do one more expensive book 8-10 bucks and then either one or two free or cheap books.
Any of the older classics, stuff like Jane Austen or Three Musketeers that sort of stuff, generally has a free copy available on the Amazon site. Just make sure you look at the pricing, it may not be the very first listing if you search for Sense and Sensibility for example but there is usually a free copy available to download. This summer I've been working on finishing up all of Jane Austen's books (Northhanger Abbey, Emma, Mansfield Park and Persuasion so far). I also just downloaded a compelation of 5 books from Agatha Christie's mysteries for like 8 bucks.
Also if you like Sci Fi or Fantasy there are many young or emerging writers who's books you can get for .99-3 bucks. There is definitly some garbage but there are also so pretty good folks mixed in there. Don't waste your time with Brian Rathbone (painfully bad).
My husband went ahead and got the Amazon Prime subscription so that definitly gives me more options on books as well.
Recent reads for me prior to the Jane Austen kick were: Room, Still Alice, Left Neglected, The Temeraire series (historical fantasy, Napoleonic war with dragons), Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, anything by Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series is great), The Help, Jane Erye (I hated it but some people love it apparently), and some Louisa May Alcott books.
Loved Room! Also loved Lottery, which has similar vein, sortof.
Ooh, I'll add it to my list.
