New to The Bump

when to announce?

I'm re-posting this on a (hopefully!) more appropriate board thanks to a helpful suggestion! ...

Just had my first pregnancy confirmed at my dr's. I'll find out next week how far along I am. Now I'm wondering when we should break the news to our families. At this point, I'm okay with waiting a while. How far along did you wait before announcing?

Unfortunately, the next time we'll see both families is in about a month ..1 week before DHs sister's wedding who can't stand me. It will be a visit unrelated to the nuptuals. Not probably ideal timing, but I certainly wouldn't announce that at any of her wedding festivities! I've considered telling just our parents prior to and not telling anyone else until after the wedding to keep the peace.

Re: when to announce?

  • My husband and I are waiting until I hit the 15 week mark before we let anyone except his sister know.  We want to make sure the baby gets through the first trimester, but we also want to let our families know before I start showing and everyone starts speculating!

  • There is no real right or wrong time to break the news.

It is very considerate of you to take the SIL wedding into consideration for your announcement!! :)

We told everyone almost right away. We waited only half a week after I took the multiple tests.

Then, on the flipside, a friend of mine, her brother and his wife only recently told people that they are expecting after she was well over 20 weeks and they knew the gender.

What it comes down to is whenever the two of you feel comfortable to tell people. But also keep in mind that it is pretty big news and usually grandparents want to brag about an upcoming baby! My parents have told the whole world! LOL So, it could come out accidentally at a family event. Waiting wouldn't be a bad idea. But it is all up to you guys.

  • There is a history in my family of miscarriage, so we're planning to try to wait until the end of the first trimester.  It won't be easy, but we don't live around our family, so that makes it easier.

That being said, we just started TTC, and I'm already going crazy, so I don't know if I'll last that long.

  • I'm in the same boat of when to tell. I've told my hubby, my bestie and another friend who will keep my secret.

BTW, bestie also got a BFP today - we are about 1 day apart and THOUSANDS of miles (WI & TX)

I"m going to try to wait until 10 weeks...so hard!

  • Hi there how are you? I have always been told to wait until you are out of the critical area which is after 12 weeks at that time you and your DH will be less stressed about the first trimester. Also I know what you mean about timing the first time I was with child I found out a week before my brothers wedding so i decided to wait until after the wedding not wanting to steal his thunder. wishing you and your DH best wishes with the new baby
