bad daycare experience vent long

I decided to send my son to a home daycare, today was his first and last day in a home daycare. I arrived 15 minutes early to drop off his stuff and go over his routine. well she was not ready so we stood outside for 15 minutes. so she took my son and he sttarted to get fussy so she went to put him down and she dropped him.  her response was omg he slipped out of my hands repeatedly, i look at my son who was sprawled on the floor on his tummy and he looked at me startled and started crawling towards me and started crying. she picked him up who nows is hysterical she said he will be fine it is his first day. i gave him a kiss and left numb and still in shock, called my husband he said wait it out (he was half asleep) called my bestie and I turned around to go get  my son. I let my husband know the plan. when i went back she looked at me confused that I was back. I said I am going to take him she was stunned and didnt know why and I told her because he fell. she asked me when and where, i said my husband and I don;t feel comfortable and he wont be coming back. she kept saying i need to give him a chance.  meanwhile my son is hysterical hyperventilating and his eyes are rolling back, all the way to the er he was howling wouldnt take his bottle pot holes were like misery for him. he checked ok thank god he is on concussion watch. filed a police report and they contacted the licensing board. the day care provider also called the licensing board 20 minutes after i picked him up.  dcp told the board she placed him on his bum and he rolled.  my son went back to his dr tonight favoring his left leg and he has trouble pulling himself up and stay standing, the pedi can see he is in pain on his left side doesn;t believe anything is broken. so we are now on concussion watch and left side watch and to call pedi in am with an update.

  • You called the police? I understand being upset and freaked out but accidents do happen. Even to the most attentive and living caregivers.

  • Wait. You called the police? I understand being upset that your son got hurt but it's not like she threw him on the floor purposefully. I really think you're over reacting.

I hope your son feels better in the morning.

  • My daughter goes to an in home daycare and I couldnt imagine calling the police unless I felt like she did something on purpose, this is their job and source of income and obviously you felt comfortable leaving you LO their after an interview... I really hope she doesnt lose her license because of this.

I do hope your LO feels  better.

  • Really? That seems a bit unnecessary. I was with you up until you called the police and licensing board. No need to make an accident so personal. Babies fall. I'm sure everyone here has dropped their baby at least once. I know I have. And I feel bad whenever I drop her, but ER and police reports seem incredibly dramatic for a simple accident.

  • Seriously, OP?  Accidents happen at daycare and everywhere.  I can't believe you did that.  Shame on you!

  • Wait. If the accident was so bad you are concerned about a concussion and went to the er why did you leave? I think you're overreacting

  • Holy Christ on a bicycle.  I'm sorry your son may be hurt but you need a major reality check.  It was an ACCIDENT and if you think an accident will never happen on your watch (or at ANY daycare, for that matter), you're in for a shock.  The police are there for crimes.  Like if she chucked him across the room.  She slipped and you're calling the police and the licensing board?  Do you realize that you're risking this woman's job (hopefully everyone else involved will realize what a major overreaction this is).  I'd hate to see someone judge you so harshly the first time you slip down the stairs holding your kid or slip across your polished floor in socks or turn your head for a head and watch your kid faceplant onto a hard floor.

  • Wait I am confused. So first you say she dropped him and it sounded like she just dropped him while she was putting him down (so I pictured it being from like a couple inches and it just scared him). Then you say he fell? Was there two separate incidents? Or just one? I am confused.

  • Holy crap, crazycakes.  Sounds to me that the DCP dodged a bullet when you pulled your DS out of her care.  I'm sure that the police and the people at the licensing board are rolling their eyes and laughing at you right about now.

  • I agree with all the others.  I know it is upsetting the first few times you have to leave lo with a dcp, especially if this was the first time and you are on the 9-12 months board.  I am assuming lo has been with you the whole time.  It is hard when they cry and the guilt is terrible.

It sounds like it was just an accident.  I couldn't totally envision the accident but how far was the drop? Kids fall off of couches and beds all the time.  I hope your baby feels better soon, but I think this is an overreaction.  I wouldn't say the dcp is neglectful or at fault.  I think the first day jitters had a big part in this.

The only thing I wasn't sure about was the discrepancy between what you said happened and what the dcp said happened. Was she trying to cover it up? Or did she just perceive it differently than you?

I don't think your dcp will welcome you back, but I think you are going to have to realize that accidents happen even in the best care.

  • Wow!  Please relax.  You do know that babies are going to have to have an adjustment period.  The fact that you called the cops and possiblly ruined this daycare provider's future over something absolutly ridiculous.  Haven't you heard of the stories on here where peoples babies fall off beds, couches, etc.?  It's not like they shove them.  And god forbid you have a squirmy baby like I have.  He's constantly trying to fall off things.

Relax and re-think your actions.  You sound crazy!

  • If you thought he was so injured, why did you leave?

Maybe I should call the cops every time daycare calls me to tell me my kid fell and hit his head.

Really, OP, shame on you.  It was an accident.  She didn't pick him up and touchdown slam him to the ground.  Good lord...

  • the update is he had a mild concussion and also has a  sprained ankle. no this was not his first with a dcp and always adjusted well. I filled a accident report with the police just like if he was a public daycare they would fill a report and follow up with the incident. nope not going to contact an attorney so you would lose the bet. nope not going back to that dcp let her know that when I picked him up. His pedi could tell he was not himsellf and been following up with him everyday. He has bruise on his foot. he has not been eating like he usually does.  If my son just fell on his butt he would have laughed and went to the toy bin. but being droppeed from 2 -3 feet hurt him. Yes I left I am not sure why I left but I did go back and get my son and it is terrifying when you can hear your child crying from the outside of her house by the street.  why did I choose to the er he was crying uncontrablly I could not calm him down nor would he take his bottle so yes as his parent who childs doesnt cry uncontrablly for no reason decided to take him. it is funny though people who know me and people I talk to back me up even a dcp who owns her own public daycare and has her masters in education..

    Holy misspellings batman.

Your kid did get hurt.  If he was dropped on his head from 2-3 feet up it was straight up not smart to leave him.  You are still crazy for contacting the police.

Accidents happen.  It could have easily happened with you or your H.

  • The accident happened in your presence.  Why did you call the police?  Would you call the police on your husband if your son gets hurt when he is in charge and you are in the room?
