Do we need a humidifier? If so what kind? Cool mist, warm mist? If this is a must have item can someone recommend one to me please that isn?t too expensive? I was hoping to spend $50 or under on one. Also are noise machines a must have, and can you recommend a good one without breaking the bank? Thanks for the help!
Re: Humidifiers? Noise machines?
lol at noise machine.
I say the humidifier is a must. The first time your baby gets a cold, that is what your pedi will tell you to do. I have the Vicks Cool Mist for DS. It was like $25. I have a warm mist in my room and I think it works better. Not sure the brand, I've had it for awhile. It was also cheap, like $30.
We have used the Homedics Soundspa Lullaby for DS since we moved him into his room. We still use it every night and love it. I have a second one for the new nursery. It is small and travels easily (we bring it on all our vacations). I got it at Walmart for around $20.
u rec'd both for my shower, the noise machine came from walmart and was 24$ and the humidifer is an elephant shaped from Target, not expensive either. here are the links.

I think the cool mist was recommended as safer so LO can't burn themselves, but I don't remember. We used ours once in a while and got a cool and warm one.
We don't use it anymore really.
We just got DD an iPod and docking station (really we just used ones we had around) and she has slept with the same playlist since she came home. We just got another set for this LO.

The humidifier will be a must for baby's first cold. That could be a year away, though (particularly if your child won't be going to day care), so if your budget is tight wait and grab one when you need it. Ours are all from Walgreens and were no more than $20-30.
Sound machine is super helpful, imo. We've always had one in our kids' rooms, and my 4 year old still naps with his on. The small Homemedics one is sufficient, it's like $19 and has a variety of sounds and a timer function.

I read something about how cool mist is recommended over warm/hot mist. Can't remember where I read it though...
My first thought when I read "noise machines" was "I bet my baby will be a noise machine." haha. We haven't bought one yet, but the fan in the baby's room creates a decent amount of white noise and we'll probably try a white noise app before buying something specifically for that.
We use a humidifier during winter months because it gets crazy dry. Also whenever DS is sick.
We swear by our noise machine. So much so that once it gets cool enough to remove DS's window unit, we'll be buying a second white noise machine. It was one of the things we bought the first week DS was home and needed it desperately. It has flown to GA several times already.
We have this one and it has served us well: https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Sweet-Slumber-Sound-Machine/dp/B001GQ2P78/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=32AYD3I4XIIVK&coliid=I260AFABXEQ81X
ETA: We have the frog version of this one in DS's room with the screw in filter thing (a must with our water!) and if we end up buying another for our room (we likely will...DD will be with us for at least 6 months), we'll get this one: https://www.amazon.com/Crane-Ee-8189-Ultrasonic-Cool-Humidifier/dp/B0050LY2DU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=32AYD3I4XIIVK&coliid=IHLKRJ85DG0NX
We use a Crane Cool Mist humidifier everynight, the elephant one. It makes a gentle trickling noise too that is nice. We have the Homedics spa noise maker and DS loves it on the ocean sounds, I still use that for every nap. When he was newborn I had it on extremely loud all the time. Babies seem to be perfectly find with loud white noise because I have heard that it is actually quite loud in utero and that your body and organs make lots of noise that they are used to, so rather than trying to be quiet for baby to sleep when they arrive, background noise is better. There were times that I would put DS in his swing and actually turn the stick vacuum on and place it next to him and he'd fall asleep with the noise.
We have a small fan ($15 at target) that goes in the corner of DS's room, and we picked up one for DD's room as well. Our house is pretty small, and this way he can't hear the TV or if we have people over, etc.
For the humidifier, we just got a small one form the pharmacy section for around $20 I think for when DS has colds etc. If they're sick at the same time, we'll pick up another for DD's room. The one we have you can control the output of the mist, so it doesn't get overwhelming which is nice. I also have Vick's plug-ins which work great too, but I would recommend staying away from the Rosemary ones

For us, both have been a must.
We use the Graco cool mist humidifier for DS in the winter b/c our heat is very drying. It was like $70, I think, plus replacement filters, but we've been very happy with it.
We also have a cheaper Safety 1st (I think?) humidifier that doesn't use a filter, for our room & the Graco one is way better.
The sound machine he has is a Marpac Marsona & it was $100+, but it was ours in our bedroom before we moved it to DS's room.
We will be getting a less expensive sound machine for DD's room, but not sure which one yet. We'll probably get the same Graco humidifier, though.
