MRSA

So I work in a medical office and cover our operator for her breaks twice a day, everyday. In a nutshell she had a wound on her hand/finger. She was being tested for MRSA and I wasn't aware. I touched everything she was touching for weeks and she just now was put on leave because her tests came back positive. I'm a little worried because I didn't know and didn't wipe anything down. I would often leave her office and eat having not washed my hands. My OB said all I can do is wait and see if a develop any wound, etc. UGH! Anyone have any additional info?

Re: MRSA

  • Staph is everywhere.  It's totally normal to have it on many surfaces and your body and never develop an infection.

That said, continue to practice good hygiene.  Wash your hands regularly, and don't touch your eyes, nose, mouth, or genitals (duh) with anything other than super-clean hands.

  • I agree with the PP, just keep everything as clean as you can, and try to not cut yourself in the areas she was around. and if you do keep the wounds closed if you can.

  • Im a nurse, we have MRSA patients every single day. If I havent got it by now, you probably won't!! You have to be susceptible to it.

Yep.  Unfortunately there are TONS of things everywhere that the average person has no idea of.  I was paranoid during my first pregnancy to even touch a patient or enter a room without gloves, gown, etc. In all honesty, I'd be more worried to touch the grocery cart at Walmart than in this situation.  Just make sure to have good hand hygiene and to cover any wounds if needed.
