Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How to get DD over separation anxiety?

DD screams every time I (or the babysitter) leaves the room. I try to get her interested in a toy first and I talk to her from the other room to let her know that I am still there. I am not sure what else to do. It's driving me insane...and I know that it is a problem for the babysitter as when DD starts to cry she gets all the other kids crying!

As of right now I am:

-getting her interested in a toy before leaving.

-telling her I am going to the other room

-talking to her from the other room

-not picking her up/running back if she is crying...I don't want her to think that crying=mommy comes back

I am at my witts end. It seems to be worse lately...not sure if it is the teething or the fact that my hubby is away for 2 weeks for work.

Any suggestions?

  • It is a phase and just keep doing what you are doing...unfortunately it is usually time that helps.

This, unfortunately.  There was no magic formula or solution for us, just time and patience.  And trust me, my patience wore thin throughout this phase!

For us, it started around 9 months, and lasted through about 11 months.  While I hated her crying, there were simply times when I needed to leave the room and leave her and let her cry.  I know how frustrating it can be, don't feel bad about stepping away for a few minutes and leaving her in a babyproofed area, or with someone else, even if she is crying.  It sounds like you are doing all of the right things.  I know it's tough on you, she will get over through it eventually though, it really is just a phase.

  • Ditto the other two pps.  DD's anxiety lasted for about 6 months or more, I can't recall.  It sucks but you just have to say to yourself that it's just one of those developmental phases that most kids go through.  DS has a little bit of it but not as bad as DD did.  He also hasn't experienced "stranger danger" like DD did.

  • Thank you for the words of encouragement! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I have been playing peek-a-boo around the house with her and that seems to help a little bit. Hopefully, we will grow out of this sooner rather than later!
