Ok girls, another rookie question. Can you see I'm starting to freak about delivery? What does it mean to have your membranes stripped and why do they do it? It sounds less than lovely.
The dr. will put his finger inside your cervix opening and run it around between your uterine wall and the amniotic sack (if i'm thinking correctly). It's supposed to release some hormones that can jump start labor. Doesn't always work, of course, and some women find it to be really really painful.

My doctor refused to do a membranes sweep, he said it often does not work and will cause pain for little to no reward.
Lily i was just thinking about you! I was hoping you had the baby as i believe we both had our bloody show around the same time. Hopefully labor comes soon for both of us!
What PP's said. My midwife would not do it until 39 weeks. It is supposed to release prostogladins, which aid in "getting things going". It may or may not help, all depends if your body is ready. I had mine done at 39 weeks and it was slightly uncomfortable, but not painful. I am still pregnant, lol, but have since starting spotting and lost more of my mucous plug. Contractions have increased and baby has dropped more.. Our baby is perfectly content right where she's at.. Just so anxious to meet her!
