Dermoid Cyst on Ovary?

I spoke with my dr today about my u/s last week.  She said that everything looks great but they did find a dermoid cyst on my left ovary.  She stressed that I shouldn't be concerned about it and that we will just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't grow too big w/ the pregnancy.  I should just call if I get a lot of pain since it can twist (or cause the ovary to twist? I was confused).  She said that it may have to be removed after the baby is born but we can talk about that as the pregnancy progresses.

Of course, I consult dr. google and although most of the articles say it is generally benign, there was some info on cancer in dermoid cysts. So, I am going to step away from google...

Anyone else have/had one?  Did you have it removed?  Anything I should look out for or do at this point?

Thanks so much!

Hmm...was it a dermoid cyst?  It was my understandig that this type of cyst will not go away on its own and surgery is the only way to remove it.

  • During my first U/S at 7 weeks, the dr. found a cyst on my ovary. Said it was nothing to be concerned about at all and it was probably the spot I ovulated from to conceive this baby. She said by the end of the pregnancy, my body would probably absorb it, but of course to call if it gives me pain and what not. She wasn't concerned in the least so neither am I. Not sure if its the same sort of cyst you have though.

  • I've had a dermoid cyst before and you're right, they don't go away on their own (unless they pop, ouch). I wasn't pregnant at the time and they removed it laproscopically. Don't read too much on dermoid cysts or it will creep you out.

ETA: I've also had a corpus luteum cyst while pregnant. This is the kind from ovulation that disappears on its own. Dermoid cysts are a whole other beast.

Too late!  I also looked at pictures.  Yuck!

I called the dr again today to ask follow up questions . She this type won't go away on its own.  It is 4cm. I;mnot sure if that is big for this kind of thing or what.  Hopefully it doesnt grow or twist with pregnancy.

  • I had one when I was a teenager, although it was much bigger than yours. Unfortunately it was cancerous and I had to have chemo after it was removed. If your doctor is not worried, you shouldn't worry either. The pregnancy hormones may stunt its growth for now (I am just guessing, I have no actual experience with this). GL and congrats on your pregnancy!

Mine was the size of a golfball and I'd had it for 10 years complaining about pain to doctors every few years and no one did anything about it until 3rd year of university when someone finally decided to do something about it. It's hard to tell if it will grow or twist, but mine just stayed put until someone decided to react. It'll probably be ok for the next few months until the baby is born, then you can tackle it. Best of luck.

  • Thanks, ladies!  I've stopped googling and am going to just have faith that things will be ok until I can have it removed.
