Baby Names

Let's talk about Norah

Our last name is four letters and rhymes with dear.  For a middle name, would something four letters, such as Jane work?  Or would a longer middle name such as Elizabeth be better?  I'm wondering if a shorter mn makes it all sound too choppy.

Also, I prefer Norah with the "h" on the end, but what do you think?

Thanks. :)

Re: Let's talk about Norah

  • I'd go with a longer name, personally.  And Norah is fine with an h, though I prefer it without.  :)

  • I like the name A LOT (with an H)... but DH wouldn't use it for my daughter because he's Israeli, and it means "terrible" in Hebrew. LOL!

  • Oh yikes! That's a really compelling reason to not use it!

I am kinda old fashion with the name norah without the h. But I have seen it both ways.

  • I love Norah, and I like it with the "H".
  • I think Jane would flow well, and I like the "h" on the end. It seems to make the name look less like a NN..does that make sense?

  • I think a longer MN would make her full name sound less choppy.

And I like Norah, with the h.

  • I know 2 Norah Elizabeths born this year! I love the name and prefer the H spelling, but I am getting a little tired of hearing the name. Both spellings are extremely popular in my area.

  • I love Norah, and with a h on the end too! I think it would sound better with a long mn to break it up a little. Norah Elizabeth would be great!

  • I prefer Norah, with an "h". I just think Nora looks incomplete, but both spellings are legitimate.

I LOVE Norah Jane, but Nora Jane has too few letters for me. It looks too informal. Norah Elizabeth is more my style.

  • I really like Norah as a NN for Elanore.  So maybe Elanore Jane.

  • For Nora(h) I think you either have to go with a one syllable middle, or a 3 syllable middle.  Anything with 2 syllables I don't think will work.

And just throwing this out there, I went to HS with a girl that has this name but she spelled it Noura.  Not sure if that is a legitimate spelling or not, though.

  • My DD is named Norah Dawn and my last name is one syllable, both first name and mn are family names. Norah is my Great Grandmothers middle name and Dawn is my Mothers name. I agree with PP that one or 3 syllables mn sound best.

I obviously prefer the "h" at the end. The name isn't super popular here, and we always get compliments on it.

I agree- I actually think Nora Jane is really cute- but our girl name was Cora Joy, so I guess I must be a fan of shorter middle names.  We just found out we are having a boy though, so I guess we'll put our name on the back burner for now!

  • My DD is named Nora Jean and we have a 5 letter two syllable last name.  I think it works great!
