Ladies who were induced (? from a PGALer)

Hi Ladies! Well looks like I will be joining you on this board some time next week!  I had my 38wk appointment this morning and due to GD and a few other reasons my OB is allowing me to be induced next week at 39wks if LO doesn't come on his own before then. Baby is low and I'm very thinned out but not dilated at all yet. For the ladies here who were induced what should I expect from the induction?  Any advice?

 Thanks girls!!

    I was induced twice.

DD#2 - I was brought in on Memorial Day at 36 weeks 5 days.  They started cervidil that afternoon (I wasn't dialated or thinned out).  I had some INTENSE contractions that evening, but didn't make any progress.  They took it out at night so I could get some sleep.  The next morning, they started pitocin.  DD was born 6 hours later.

DD#3 - I was induced at 38 weeks.  I was brought in at about 8:00 p.m.  While getting me all set up, my water broke on its own. They gave me cervidil again (this time, I was VERY thinned out but not dialated).  By morning, I was dialated to 2 cm.  They started pitocin, and DD was born 5 hours later.

Word of caution.....cervidil REALLY irritates things *ahem* down there. Surprise  If possible, ask that they wait a while after taking out the cervidil to check you.  With DD#2, they checked me right away, and holy $@!# it felt like they were cutting my insides with razor blades!!  With DD3, they waited a while and let me take a shower first.  SO. MUCH. BETTER! Big Smile

Good luck! It's really not that bad!

We were induced due to high BP, GD, border line pre-e.  When I got to the hospital I was already 3cm and 80% effaced -- I was contracting periodically, but nothing I was really feeling.  They started me on pitocin and broke my water within an hour of that.  3 hours later, I was already at 8cm and 100% effaced.

However... for me, I got stuck at 8cm.. labored there for 5 hours before they did and emergency c-section.  If LO's big head hadn't gotten wedged in my pelvis, we probably would have been done in 5 hours total.

Best of luck -- everyone's body handles induction differently.. I have a work friend who was induced and after 2 days of trying, they had to do a c-section because she never got past 3cm.. and then I've heard other people say that their induction was a complete breeze.. hopefully LO decides to make his/her appearance before your induction, and it'll all be smooth sailing!!!

I posted in your PGaL post that the check-in process was nice b/c I was in no pain. Plus, I liked getting to know my nurse before I was in pain. We got there early in the a.m. and I was hooked up to the pit by about 8 a.m. Had DD just after 5 p.m. I did get an epi in the afternoon. Since I didn't have normal contractions, I don't have anything to compare to but I wasn't at the point of giving up when I got my epi. I just knew I wanted one. I was at about a 6 and progressed quickly...I was ready to go within 1.5 hours of getting the epi.

I think I showed up 2-3 and like 80% effaced. Your LO's head being low is a good sign. I felt better knowing DD was low.

They ended up using a suction to get DD out but then I only pushed for 7 min. My blood pressure was low and her hr was dropping. We also had the NICU there b/c of meconium.

    GL to you!

Did they tell you what position your cervix was in? If it's moved forward, that's a good sign.

I was induced at one day shy of 41 weeks since my OB didn't want me to go past 41 weeks - went in at 9am. He uses a 1/4 pill of Cytotec for inductions though, which isn't very common (DON'T google it, understand that horror stories are from years and years ago when they would use a full pill - this is just a fourth of a dose) Anyway, it worked well for me, I didn't really feel contractions for a couple of hours. I was closely monitored but they let me get up every 45 min to walk around. I had to be hooked up to an IV the whole time. My OB had to break my water about 3.5 hours later, then the contractions got more intense. Made it to 4cm before asking for the epidural. The epi allowed me to relax and take a nap while I progressed. Hit 10cm just before 5pm that day, pushed for 25 min and DD was born.
