Cloth Diapering

cloth diapering part time...thoughts?

Hi Ladies,

Unfortunately I work full time and there isn't a way to get around that for awhile.  I really want to cloth diaper, for lots of reasons, but one of the main ones is for financial reasons.   I'm pretty sure that the daycare that I will be using won't use cloth diapers.  I still have hopes to talk them into it but I know that's a long shot.  I would also love to find someone to keep the baby in thier home who would cloth diaper but that's a long shot as well.  So, my questions is have any of you cloth diapered part time(just at home) and is it worth it financially?

  • I work full time, starting CDing part time when DS was 7ish months, and CDing full time since he was 12m (he's now 16m). It's worth it financially and you may be very surprised what daycares and caregivers will do CDs. I still work full time and we don't use disposables anymore (he also developed an allergy to the elastic in them, after a year!).

  • I CD full time for now, but I have the same concerns about DC, that they won't take the cloth diapers.  I think that you're going to have to show them how it's no different from disposables and that you'll do all the work.  I am hoping that I won't have to go back to work, but that could change.  If I do, then I'll do as many other moms here have described and bring all of the materials to them.

The way I see it is that any time you use cloth, you're saving yourself money and saving the environment.  There are so many money saving ways to CD.  I would still do it if you can.

  • We part-time CD and so far it has been worth it financially.

DS goes to DC 3 days a week, where they won't cloth diaper. He goes through 4-5 sposies a day there which means about 95ish diapers a month. So we're able to get by with only buying 1 Jumbo pack of disposables each month -- WAY less than before.

He's in cloth every evening and all day Friday, Sat, Sun & Mon (my Mom watches him on Friday & Monday).

It's worked out well for us so far and I think it's worth it.

  • Please don't feel it's an all or nothing venture. Use them as much or little as you want. For me it depends on the child. Anytime you use a CD that is one less sposie you have to buy. But if the reason is financial just try and not get caught up in the expensive cutsie boutique CD's and you'll do fine.

As far as Daycare most of the major chain daycare's flat out wont but if you find an independent DC you might get them to consider it if you buy super easy AIO diapers ( I adore Bum Genious Freetime or Elemental, also one size too which is nice)  Give them a big wet bag and have them throw the dirties directly in. It really causes them no more work than sposies.

    Good Luck!!

  • I just wanted to add my experience with daycare/cloth diapers. I went to the daycare and said "here is what we use, that won't be a problem will it?" (as I show them my already stuffed fuzzibunz cloth diaper. I said that all they have to do is through it in the bag, poop or pee, and I will handle it when I get home. I also mentioned that my DD breaks out in rashes using disposables (not true, but oh well) and that was the reason we had to switch, on the doctors suggestion. Daycare was quick to allow it. I know some daycares require a doctors note which isn;t difficult to get as doctors will take mom's word on it for this kind of thing
