CP: How many are still nursing?

Just curious...now that all our babies are close to 14 months, I was wondering how many are still nursing.  Please feel free to add more details![Poll]

Re: CP: How many are still nursing?

  • Still going at 3x/day. After she wakes up, after we get home from daycare, and before bed. She can miss that late afternoon session without it being a big issue. Don't have any plans on weaning right now. Things seem so easy now that I don't have to worry about pumping during the day!

  • We are down to 2x per day.  We nurse first thing in the morning and before bed.  I think C is starting to lose interest in the morning session, but for now we will keep like we are.

  • around 4x a day.
  • If we're at home, M nurses quite a bit- at least 6 times a day and she still nurses at least once in the night.  But if we're out and about she doesn't really ask to nurse, or she will but only for a minute or so.  I am ready to drop the night nursings as the first step of sleep training, I just haven't taken the plunge yet.

  • First thing in the morning and before bed. If he's having a rough day teething or falls or something, he might ask to nurse during the day, too, but those times are the exception.

  • Still BF'ing on demand - which has been around 6-7 times per day recently. It seems like she nurses more frequently than others have said their LOs do on this board.

I'd say we nurse about 5-8x a day.

  • I fully weaned myself from the pump this past Saturday. I am finally done with the pump. Avery gets one cup of frozen BM a day now and the rest is WCM.

  • Clara still nurses a lot. Always in the morning, before nap, after nap, and before bed. But a lot of the time if we're at home she'll ask to nurse in between those times, and I usually offer her a snack and then let her nurse if she still wants to. I'm not planning to wean her anytime soon, probably between 18-24 months old since we both like our nursing sessions and I know she gets a lot of good nutrients that way.

Are you a SAHM? I wonder if there is a correlation. I would think that spending the whole day together your LO would be reminded and want to nurse more often. DD started refusing BM from bottles or cups around 11 months. Since then it's been whole milk at daycare and nursing at home. I think she just has less opportunity to nurse since I work.

DD still nurses a lot, but the number of sessions varies. It's always- 1 in the MOTN (trying to gradually wean this one), when she wakes up, before her nap, after her nap before dinner, and before bed. And then usually at least another random one, sometimes more.

However, when she's teething, she refuses all solid foods and nurses like 10-12x/day.

Also, when she's upset or falls or something, but that's usually just for a few seconds as a comfort thing.

If we're out somewhere, usually I can distract her with something else, but if we're at home,  and I try to distract her with water or food, she'll take a small bite, look at me like "WTF???" and furiously signs "milk" over and over until she gets what she wants ;)

LOL.  If DD feels really strongly about it, she'll use both hands to drive the message home.  Cracks me up every time.

Yes, I am a SAHM and I think what you said is correct. If she stays home for a few hours with DH, she'll accept food as a snack from him and seems satisified so I think she just thinks more often about BF'ing when she has me nearby.

Also, like someone else mentioned, she barely eats any solids when she's teething and instead nurses a ton. It must be a lot easier on her mouth.

I'm glad to read that there are others who have LO's still nursing quite often like mine! I was wondering how common it was because I don't have any friends IRL who nursed this long.

  • DD nurses a bunch while we're at home (SAHM here) but I think a lot of it is from boredom or because she's hungry and uses the sign for milk for food and water too...we're working on that. I'm starting to offer food before milk and then give milk if she's still insistent.

I'm interested to see what she does when my colostrum comes in. I'll let her go up until the summer before she starts school (around 3) because I think it'll cause problems if she talks about having mummy milk at school (with the other students).

  • We are working on weaning now slowly. I dropped naptime nursing one minute every week or so since his bday and today was the first time not nursing for nap. He dropped feeding before bed on his own and he still nurses first thing. We will work on dropping that in a few weeks again using the same method.

  • Still going strong. Mornings, before nap, and before bed. She still nurses 1-2 times overnight as well. She really doesn't ask for us unless it's associated with sleep.

We plan to wean sometime this fall so we can start TTC.

  • Still feeding on demand and will continue as long as DS would like. Always when he wakes up, before nap, and before bed. Plus whenever he wants. Usually 2 more in addition to what I mentioned here, so 5 times a day would be average. He also asks for it if he falls down or is upset or something like that. He nursed practically 48 hours straight last week when he was sick. I don't see him weaning anytime soon.
