VBAC

When do you plan to go to the hospital?

I wanted to labor at home as long as possible. But, I am beginning to have second thoughts. I know the risk of uterine rupture is very low. However, my personality is very worrisome. So, I am thinking of going when I am having contractions every 5 min for 2 hours. What are your plans for this?

  • I will have a montrice with me this time around. She can do cervix checks and recommends going to the hospital around 5 cm because she wouldn't want me to be in transition during the car ride. She had no concerns about uterine rupture.

  • It depends on how dilated I am before I go into labor. I was 4 cm with DD but with very little contractions and my water never broke. I will labor at home for a bit but also want to get there before the epidural is still a possibility if I want it.

  • I'm not sure yet. My last VBAC started feeling contractions at about 2:30 in the morning and she was born at 7 am. I'm more worried about this baby coming faster and being in the car since the hospital is an hour away but I also don't want to be there too early for them to force any interventions.

  • My Ob wants me to go as soon as I feel intense pain and regular contractions.

  • My midwife and doula both recommend laboring at home as long as possible. My doula would ideally like me to show up at the hospital when I'm 7-8cm and just about ready to push the baby out.

On a side note, I find it entertaining/annoying how hospitals insist on fetal monitoring for safety, and at the same time encourage you to labor at home as long as possible where there is no way to be monitored. Obviously it's not THAT vital or they'd all tell you to get to the hospital immediately.

  • Thank you for replying!! I am going to stay at home as long as possible I think. And I totally agree about the whole fetal monitoring thing!

  • My hospital is only 20 min away from my house so I'm planning on staying home as long as possible, that way I'm guaranteed to have a bath, the hospital has birthing pools in a number of the birthing rooms but not all. I know from last time that the warm water helps me a lot.
