Potty training on the go....experience, advice?

Hi Ladies!  I tried PTing DD1 quite a few months back and it was pretty quickly apparent that she just wasn't ready yet. This past week we gave it another go and she is doing wonderful!

My question is what do you do when you are on the go?  She can hold it rather well and give us plenty of notice (so far) and she tells me when she has to go.  I am a germaphobe about public bathrooms and her little butt just doesn't fit on the big potties. )We have a toilet ring for at home.)

What do you do while out and about?  Did you buy a portable/foldable toilet ring and if so, which one? Do you like it? Did you buy those giant, sticky disposable toilet covers? Or, did you buy one of those little pop-up potties to go where ever?

Thank you for any advice, tips, experience, etc that you have to offer!  I want this to go as smoothly as possible.

  • Hi! We keep a portable potty in the back of the car. We have a Forrester so it's easy enough for him to go in the back. I have no idea what we'll do when New England's winter kicks in. He was terrified of public toilets for awhile and wanted nothing to do with the foldable ring. I sort of sit behind him and hold him and he's good Air hand driers are still evil to him. He is getting better and better about telling me. It's taken about
Three weeks for him to be completely potty trained. Good luck!

  • A friend toted a potty ring everywhere. If we were at a place with a bathroom, we'd use it. I kept a potty chair in the back of the van for parks without a bathroom or long car rides.

  • I bought one of those foldable potty seats and cleaning wipes - as soon as she's done  using it, I clean it and put it right back in the carrier bag it came in.  She's doing better on the potty by itself now but every now and then we still use it.

It's from Walmart and was around $10.

  • I have this one (sorry no clicky)

I really like it a lot. DD actually potty trained herself using this potty while we were on vacation back east 3 weeks ago. It can be used as a stand up potty or a ring and it folds up to fit in a large purse or diaper bag. I leave it in my car if we are out shopping. If she needs to go we just run out to the car and have her go pee in the back of my car. I take it to the pool and she will either use it where we sit or I take it into the bathroom and she sits in front of the mirror ( not inside the stall yet). She absolutely despises public bathrooms (mostly becuase of the loud flushing and hand dryers) so I am not sure yet how it will work when we have not option other than a public restroom. We will be flying to Europe in about 6 weeks so we will have to deal with airplane bathrooms. I figure that in the airport there will be handicapped large stalls but in the plane that's going to be a different story.

The baggies for this potty are sort of pricey but I've found that the sassy disposable diaper sacks (Walmart) work well will a little bit of stretching and they are only $2 for 50 of them. The only plus about the special bags is that you can fold the potty with the bag ready to go. So far I have not had any use for that yet so the cheapo baggies work well.

This. We have the Sesame street one and DD loved sitting on Elmo.

  • Thank you all so much for your responses! I was thinking about getting her either the foldable seat or the Kalencom-2-in-1-Potett. I don't have a large enough vehicle for her to do her business in the back of but I am leaning towards the Kalencom-2-in-1-Potett as a couple of you suggested. It seems versatile enough that she can use it in either situation, if need be. She doesn't have an issuse with the public flushing or hand driers, thank goodness. Thank you again!!!
