stopping work?

hi,

I have been working from home for a few weeks, but am really ready to stop until the twins come in a few weeks due to the extreme swelling in my fingers, fatigue, etc. I am just shutting down and would love to have a little time to rest before the babies come.

My options are taking a leave from work without pay until the twins come, or asking my obgyn to put me on short term disability until I deliver. However, I am not sure what he will say, as I do not currently have any real medical issues other than the standard complaints to be expected at this point in a multiple pregnancy!

has anyone dealt with this?

Re: stopping work?

  • Yeah I not-so-subtly hinted around at being put on STD with my OB and, no dice.   I'm pretty sure most of them will tell you it is considered unethical to put you on disability unless there is a true medical reason for doing so.  Although, perhaps you will be lucky and have an OB that considers being pregnant with multiples a medical issue?  So here I am writing this from work today - loving every minute of being 35 weeks plus and at work 9 hours day with no end in sight! (or at least it feels that way!) ;)  You may just have to take unpaid leave - but check with your HR to see if it will start eating into FMLA (if you are concerned about that) - if you go to 38w but take leave starting now that would eat up 5 weeks of FMLA for you and you'd only have 7 job-protected weeks with your babies.

  • I know the feeling.. But look at the bright side at least you are at home. I only get 6 weeks at home with my twins and recently was told by my job that since I've been working here less 1 year I don't qualify for FMLA- so 6 weeks is a "courtesy".

I also haven't had any "real" complications other than fatigue, swelling, and numbness in my fingers. So what I did was I asked my midwife if she could cut my hours down to 32 vs. 40, she was MORE than happy to do it!. So basically I work Monday-Thursday. This has helped somewhat and on Fridays it allows me a day at home to unwind and prepare for my twins.

Talk to your OB or midwife, they are usually really good at sympathizing and are willing to help you with getting comfortable.

     Hope it's helped!

  • Without any real complications, my OB was happy to write me off work whenever I was ready, which was right around 33 weeks.

Im a teacher and being on my feet and my carpal tunnel (from pregnancy) all and al I was miserable. He was very accommodating.
