November 2012 Moms

NBR: Mouse infested!!!!!! GRRRRR.....

I must vent.  I walked into our kitchen this morning to find MOUSE DROPPINGS all over the counter tops, sink, stove top, island, and wood floor.  And I mean all over.  We bought this house 6 years ago and have the same problem every single fall :-(  Granted, we live outside of a city and very close to a gigantic open space - which explains why field mice love our house.  I hate, hate, HATE them!!  My husband told me to relax and flipped.  Our weekly cleaning crew isn't due to come until Wednesday, but I called for an emergency scrub down of the kitchen - even though I bleached and scrubbed the whole thing this morning.  Exterminator due here any minute.

Oh, how I wish my Boxer would tolerate cats...

 /end vent/

  • I grew up with this same problem.  My parents lived in between two fields and every year they would flood the house around plowing time.

They got a jack russell terrier and the problem is gone :)

I have a Boston Terrier, so you'd think our problem would go away too.  Nope.  They just infest at night when she is fast asleep.  We no long have the moth problem because of her excellent moth hunting skills though!!

Sneaky guys!  Have you tried any of those noise machines?  I have heard that they work, though I've never tried one.

Hmmm, I've never heard of a noise machine for mice.  I'll absolutely look into it.  I'll do just about ANYTHING, including hunting them myself, which is my next plan if the exterminator's magic doesn't work immediately.  I have heard of using oil of peppermint diluted with water in a spray bottle.  Apparently, they hate the smell of peppermint, which I happen to love.  So, I'll be trying that tonight on top of the exterminator's stuff.  I might even go buy a noise machine to make their lives really miserable.  Thanks for the tip!

  • Be careful! My mom had field mice when I was pregnant with son and the exterminator said its super dangerous for pregnancy due to all the disease they carry and the chemicals they use to get rid of them. STAY AWAY!!!

  • Aww, that really sucks. We will be moving soon and the house we're moving to is on an acreage in the country. We already moved our two cats there while our current house is on the market. The first weekend our cats were at the new place, they caught two mice. The house was vacant for for awhile before we bought it, so a couple mice must have snuck in. We haven't had a problem since. Maybe you could borrow a couple cats for a night? haha :)

Exactly!  Husband, dogs, and I are staying in town tonight with my sister.  This is part of the reason I bleached my entire kitchen this morning with my husband's respirator mask with filter on!  Then the cleaning crew arrives in 30 minutes to further disinfect! Luckily the weather is gorgeous in the mountains today, so all of the windows in my house are open!

Seriously, though, I absolutely would.  My Boxer hates cats with a passion, so he'd have to stay elsewhere.  I might borrow my neighbors kitties if I see another dropping after today's extermination.  That, or set up snares all over my kitchen!

  • we've had problems in the past too.  Snap traps and our cat have kept things in check, and then I've used that expanding spray foam in cracks and pipe chases where they were coming into the kitchen at night.  Oh, the sinks I've filled with bleach water and drawer contents!  I feel your pain.  Good luck, and seriously consider a cat or two!!  They live to hunt at night!
