IKEA and a website rec

Is IKEA really all that?  As I mentioned last week, I am making my bedroom my winter project...primary objective is to create more storage...it is a bit of a challenge with this being an attic bedroom.  I was looking at a website recommended by a friend with a lot of suggestions (like thousands) and what I was noticing was turning the bed itself into additional storage.  And it make me think of IKEA (even though I have never been there, nor do I own anything IKEA) and found some items on their website that I think would work great for us.

And the website recommendation:  houzz.com.  A co-worker recommend this site - tons and tons of decorating ideas for all rooms of the house.  (Kind of like an extended version of Pinterest for home only I guess).  I just looked at attic bedrooms on there, but will definitely be exploring a lot more for updates to our current home and ideas for when we get around to building our new home.

  • I love IKEA.  Our dressers are from there as well as a few other items in my house.  Some of the stuff is lesser quality but you pay less, you do get what you pay for and if you spend more money I think the quality goes up.

Also things come in a million pieces.  I don't mind and love assembling, so it's fun for me, DH cannot do it, it drives him insane

  • It depends on what items you buy from Ikea. Sofa, cribs, art work, plates, mirrors, mattress, rugs ... all that stuff is ok

Do not buy kitchen cabinets, chest drawers, wardrobe, bed frames etc from them.  They do not last!

  • Going to IKEA is an experience. It's huge and the displays are amazing. I agree that it's not the highest quality. We have a few things from IKEA and overall we are happy with them. I would not buy bedroom furniture and plan on having it forever. It's just not heirloom type stuff. But, if you are looking for a fairly affordable way to update a room and know that it's not going to last forever, it's definitely a great option.

If you have an IKEA anywhere near you, definitely go! It's worth a trip.

This is exactly what I'm going for.  I'm guessing four more years tops (anything more than that and I may go insane) in this house and I want something that will work for now...get us by until we can get out.

  • I agree with what all the PPs have said.  Make sure you have several, SEVERAL hours to go through the store.  It's not the highest quality, but for some things you don't need high quality.  They have really good ideas for organizing and I love how they have rooms set up.  They will show you a 300 sq. foot room to show you how to best maximize the use of space.  This gives you great ideas.  It is an organizer's dream place (that and the container store!).  I say definitely go and get some cheap organizing things.  Then you could pay more for other things (bed, dresser) if you don't like the ones or the quality at Ikea.  Happy shopping and keep us updated on your bedroom progress!!

  • I've never been to an IKEA, or have anything from there, but I wish I had one nearby.  Unfortunately I'm of no help there.

I just wanted to say thank you for the site rec.  Once I get this report that I'm working on today finished I know what I'm doing!!

  • There is one in West Chester, which is just south of Dayton. We have a lot of Ikea in our home...You definitely get what you pay for. When we purchased our home we got $30 dressers. Once Avery started pulling up they got the boot. We just re-did our Master as our house has Zero Storage. We are still working on the final touches, but when it is done I will post pictures if you would like. There is an entire site of Ikea Hacks where they take Ikea products and turn them into something else....
