I've read the book, but haven't tried the method. I really believe it will work magic on some babies, and others not so much. It seems to rigid to work on all babies, but why not try it?!
On another note, a girlfriend of mine had twins a couple months ago (I posted about her happy, relaxed, sleeping through the night twin girls a few weeks ago). She swears by this book.
A friend of mine swears by this method, so we're going to read the book and give it a try. She did say that you do have to make accomodations for your child sometimes, but the basic idea is grea.
One of my five parenting classes was about this method, and we watched part of the video and discussed the material (via a handout) in the class... so while I have neither read the book nor watched the complete video, I 100% recommend the method! I completely believe in "the 4th trimester" (The first 3 months of a baby's life being a transition period to life outside the womb.)
I never heard of it before this post, but I did a little research and am intrigued... I think we might try it, since everyone seemed to get such good results. Did everyone have a colicky baby who used it, or does it work well with your average newborn, too?

My DD wasn't colicky, but she wasn't the easiest baby either. Of course there will be some babies who it won't work well for, but I think finding the right combination of the 5 S's will be helpful for most. At the very least, it couldn't hurt to have some tricks up your sleeve that *might* help for those moments when you're at your wit's end with a screaming newborn. It's better than nothing!

Neither of my girls were colicky though DD1 had a "witching hour" in the evening where I shushed and bounced her to keep her happy. DD2 went to sleep each night being swaddled, bounced and shushed loudly in her ear.
All methods are traps for ftm. I Relied in several different books the first time, and my son did not follow any of them. I was in tears much of the time.
Read the books, if you like, but listen to your baby for your 'method'.
Re: The happiest baby on the block?
Loved it and swore by it for my very fussy, colicy, AR baby.
I had the DVD and the book!

I didn't believe it until I tried it and WOW. I am now reading Happiest Toddler on The Block.
If you don't want to buy it check to see if your library has it. I got the book and DVD from ours.

I loved it!!
I swear by it. It worked like a charm for DD.
DD would sometimes fight the swaddle for a few mins but once I combined it with the other techniques she'd settle right down.
