Well my daughter is really long now and she has to actually sit criss cross applesauce in her car seat. She really is uncomfortable and we are trying for as long as we can. She has gotten too long to sit facing the rear that's our reason. She is still facing the rear but next month when she turns one we are opting to turn her around. To be honest we may have to get her a new carseat anyway. I dont think we are being selfish, it's just time to do it.
If you are still using an infant seat, then yes, you likely need a new car seat. The next seat would probably be a convertible car seat which can either rear or forward face and you will be able to use that same car seat for years to come.
I'm sure that this poster has already made up her mind, but just in case there are others reading that might think she is speaking the truth, I want to point out that it's a myth that a child is too long to rear face if they have to criss cross their legs. They aren't too long to rear face until they outgrow the limits of their car seat, which has nothing to do with the length of their legs. Usually it's around 40 lbs rear facing for a convertible car seat, and within 1 inch of the top of the shell for height. My almost 3 year old is still rear facing and is a long ways off from being too long. I can't post a pic because I'm using chrome, but once I an get back to this site from another browser, I will post a picture of my almost 3 year old still rear facing.
