Does anyone have already/ looking to buy a mini crib? Thoughts?

I've been debating our options as to what kind of crib to buy since we are so limited on space in our apt. I've been looking at all the options cribs, pack n plays etc. I just discovered a couple mini cribs I really like, but while the look perfect room wise I don't want to spend $$ on something that will only last for a short period of time. Some reviews I've seen people are saying it was a great choice for the first 10 months, others are saying they worked great up to 2 years. I just don't want to have to buy a regular size crib a year from now. Any STM's have any experience with mini cribs or is anyone else thinking of buying one?

This is one that I'm interested in

  • I would check ikea. I'm in Germany right now but I looked at some over here lucky to have a store near by, and ended up with one from a store a lot like ikea. It's really very basic and I'm using it as a toddler bed now. It's light weight, easy to move, and takes up little space. Also pretty cheap. If you have that option check it out.

  • I bought a mini crib. I absolutely love it. It is compact & fits perfectly in our small home. DS will be able to climb out before he outgrows it length wise. It converts into a twin bed later on. They are just as practical and fantastic for small areas! I got mine from walmart and we just love it.
  • I've been going back and forth with myself over getting a mini crib...we'll be mooving cross country when the baby is only a few months old, so as far as buying furniture goes, I have to keep in mind that we're going to have to move it all, still, and there's no garauntee our rental down south will be any bigger than our space up here (moving in with future SIL and BIL in a rental until we both find adequate housing).

Most of the kids in my family end up in toddler or twin beds by 13-14 months because we're all apparently part monkey and learn to climb crib rails early, so i'm no too concerned about baby outgrowing it...I think it's hard to judge furniture on the internet, though, I'm trying to find somewhere that I can actually go SEE the crib in person so I get a better idea of it.

  • Just something to think about: make sure that mini crib mattresses are available, and affordable, in your area if you plan to buy a mini crib!

I've heard in some areas they can be hard to come by or the prices are badly inflated... probably a bigger concern for rural areas.

  • I looked into getting a mini crib with DD#1 because I had such a small apartment. I ended up nixing the idea because they seemed really flimsy at Babies R Us, and they didn't have matching dressers. Oh yeah, and you can't buy any cute bedding for them.

  • I'm not sure how small they are, but I love that my DD is 20 months old and still has some room to grow in her regular crib. She is SO not ready for a bed. She would never stay in it, and never sleep. FWIW DD is in the 10th percentile for height and has maybe 12-15 inches below her feet and maybe 6 inches above her head right now as I look at her on the monitor. So, not cramped, but not a ton of extra space.
