What do you think of Ryan Maxwell but calling the baby Max?
DH and I like the name Max and think it's really cute but we don't love the name Maxwell (and don't like the idea of just using Max, which I don't think is really a name by itself) so we don't really want to use Maxwell as the first name. Also, we sort of wonder if as an adult "Max" would be appropriate in the businessworld and thought that by using Ryan Maxwell our son would have the choice when he's older to change his name and use his first name, Ryan, if he wanted.
Re: Middle name as first name?? Ryan Maxwell?
I'm honestly not a fan of naming a baby a certain name and then calling them by their middle name. I've always been sort of a staright forward person. If you want to call him Max name him Max not something else. It just seems so backwards to me.
But with that being said its only a personal opinion and I don't think there is anything "bad" about the naming style you suggested. Its just truly NMS.
EDITed for clarity.
I agree.
I also like the name Ryan much more than Maxwell.

I think it's fine. I don't understand when people have a problem with this. I have a friend who goes by her middle name because she doesn't like her fn, so it may end up happening whether you intend it to or not.
Also, I love Maxwell.
I can't get the ticker to work, but I have two sons:

I think this name looks okay (and I usually don't like Maxwell, because of the coffee).
I don't think it's too out there to call him Max. There is also Maximus and Maximilian...
On the other hand I think Max would be fine in the business world.
My parents named me one thing but called me another from day 1, similar to your question. It really makes things difficult in life because I've never been called "Ryan" in my life although it's my legal name. Everyone knows me by "Max".
When I was a kid in school, there were teachers who refused to call me "Max" saying "Ryan" was my legal name and that's what they were going to use. It really irritated me as to me that wasn't my name. There were other teachers who took forever to remember that my name was "Max' (understandably, there's a lot of new kids at the beginning of the year to learn) It really made the beginning of every school year uncomfortable for me as a child.
As an adult when I have to do banking or any other sort of formal business that requires your legal name it can get confusing. I really wish my parents would have just named me what they intended to call me, as that's my name, I've never used anything else. I was going to legally change it, but my Mom took offense so I didn't.
That's just my opinion but again I wish they would have just named me the name they've called me since birth.
I like Ryan Maxwell.
I think it flows.
And, I think if you want to call the baby "Max", then go for it.
I personally hate my first name, and ditched it the moment I left for college. I go by my middle name. I'm totally okay with that, and people are none-the-wiser until I tell them my full name or they see my signature.
{....or they grew up with me...}
I like Max, I like it as a nn for Maddox.
Maddox Ryan is cute.

I really like that, too!
But I don't think there's anything wrong with calling your child by his middle name, personally. As a teacher, I see it all the time, and it's not a big deal.
Also, I personally think Max is fine as a name in and of itself. (It's on my list.)
