Bassinet Question

This is probably a question for STMs. All of the bassinets I have seen (other than the co-sleepers), seem to have solid sides that don't let air flow through. I know that bumpers on the crib can pose a suffocation risk, but what about the solid sides of the bassinet? Can anyone offer any insight here?

I'm wondering if we should get a bassinet for our room as we'd like to have the baby in the same room for a while. Maybe we should just get a cradle?

Could you tell me what brand it is? All of the ones I've seen seem to have solid sides with fabric.

    Thanks for your replies ladies.

  • I actually used a family bassinet (it is about 40 years old). It had solid sides, but they are low enough that it gets air flow. DD was fine it in.

  • Pack and plays are great because they come with the bassinet option, but can be used for a long time after for other things.  We had a Moses basket with LO and just set it on a non-slip mat on our nightstand. :)

    Here's one with mesh.

  • You know I have a bassinet and we used it for 5-6 months for our son, then he was moved to his bumpered crib. Now people are saying the bumpers are dangerous, but of they are, how are bassinets not?

  • sorry...bump burp.

Bumpers are more considered dangerous because the child may find a way to pull them away from the sides causing strangulation or suffocation.  Bassinets are not ment to hold a baby that is capable of rolling so that risk would be gone, or at the very least diminished greatly.  At one point (I'm not sure if this has changed) the AAP was saying that there was one brand of breathable mesh bumpers (which were red and ugly) that were ok.  There is also talk of air circulation and that being a cause of SIDS, but consider the difference in a crib and a bassinet...bassinets are very shallow while cribs are about 3-4 times deeper, so the only air flow comes from the sides.

Anyhow...this is that link.  This isn't exactly my bassinet, mine is just prettier but has the same parts.  The moses basket, which is removable and fits loosly into the frame, has mesh sides. I'll be honest.  I never used the thing.  My 9 month old LOVED the pack n play newborn napper and she slept in it until she was almost four months.  Because of it's curvature I never had to worry about her rolling even a little and we never needed to swaddle.  If you are buying a pack n play I HIGHLY reccomend going this route.  Our pack n play has been worth every single penny.  I felt (as a ftm) that I was somehow cheating the baby by not buying a cute bassinet, but we quickly realized the bassinet was a waste.  We will use it this time though only because we don't have room for 2 pack n plays and our 9 month old plays in the pack n play now.

  • Thanks again for all the replies, ladies. :) It has really helped! I think we'll take a look at all these options and then see what would work best in our bedroom.

  • One of the key things about SIDS is the recycling of stale air, it's as signficant a threat as laying on the face or pushed against a bumper.  For that reason I did not use a bassinet, we went straight to crib.  We did the crib in our bedroom the first month & then b/c LO made so much noise we moved him into his room.  I wish we'd moved him sooner.

We have this one. I find this to be the prettiest Contours one, by the way. It has mesh sides. He slept in it for about 6 months. My husband took it apart. A mere 3 months later I'm pregnant again. :-)

  • For the first 2 weeks, DS slept in the pack n play. The one I bought came with a bassinet attachment. After that, he slept in his crib with breathable bumpers. Bassinets are generally so shallow that you don't have to worry about airflow through the sides.
