Blood pressure question

Hi Ladies!

Just wondering if anyone had any issues with their blood pressure and how cautious was your doctor? I'm almost 34 weeks and my blood pressure has been on the higher side for the past two months, though still in the normal range. Last week and this week though, it has been much higher (162/89 last week, 150/90 today). Last week they had me go to triage to be monitored for a while, but this week they just took more blood and they want to see me again on Monday, I guess to check my pressure again. Everything checked out fine with my bloodwork last week and this week.

I guess my question is, what has your experience been with high blood pressure? Were you induced early and if so, how high did your blood pressure get before they felt they had to induce you?

Re: Blood pressure question

  • I can't answer your question about being induced early, but I would think they would take those high numbers seriously. My doctor said there's risk for stroke for both you and the babies when that bottom number stays around or above 90 for a long period of time. I've had a few issues with high blood pressure, but the numbers usually come down if I lay on my left side and just try to relax and not stress. Glad to see that your blood work came out okay, and I'm guessing you haven't had any protein in your urine. I know it's easier said than done, but let yourself relax as much as possible and drink plenty of water! GL!

  • I'm trying to keep myself as relaxed as I can! No protein in my urine, thankfully! And, I'm a water FIEND. I probably drink over 100oz of fluid a day. . . between water and other stuff.

I'm just getting a little worried. I know how serious high blood pressure is and I want to make sure nothing bad happens. . .

  • Mine started creeping up and I was showing a small amount of proteins in my urine. My doctors ended up adjusting my procardia (I was originally on it for PTl) to a higher/extended release dose to control my BP. I have to monitor it daily and call for any abnormal readings (either low or high) or if I show any other Pre E symptoms. They also check my bloodworm and urine at each visit and compare it to my baseline readings.

Right now my BP is controlled by the procardia, but unlike most people I will not come off of that at 34 weeks, I stay on it until delivery and possible after because of the BP.

I was told if it gets to the point where meds can't control it, my protein levels rise, or it's not safe they will deliver early.I was not given an exact number, but I am supposed to call if I get any reading higher than 140/90, they usually have me rest and call back later to report if it's gone down. Right now we are planning on a c/s for 36 weeks.

  • I had HBP with my singleton.  It started around 28 weeks and by 32 weeks I was on bedrest until the end.  My induction was scheduled for 40 weeks exactly but my water broke 2 days before.  Bedrest really helped... I had NST's 2x a week and had to do a 24 hour urine catch every week but everything stayed good while on bedrest.

    GL!

  • At 31 weeks my BP was consistantly high (bottom was over 90)- so they put me on bedrest and Labetalol.  I also had a 24 hr urine catch- no protien. At 34 weeks we did another 24 hour urine catch- there was protien present- I was also taking the maximum dose of Labetalol.  I was told to watch for pain in my upper right abdomen, head aches and visual distrubances.  At 34wk 3d, I had a killer headache all day, my BP was higher than normal, and I began to see "shooting stars".  I called at 3:30pm, was sent to L&D, and delivered my boys by c-section at 8pm.  The c/s was a known need since both my boys were breech.  Which BTW did not help my BP- I was on meds for 3 months after delivery until my BP went back to normal.
  • My BP was similar to yours at that stage and we went into our appointment at 37 weeks expecting it to be higher, but it had actually gone down. Still, since I was already so far along, the doc really wanted to go ahead that week since my BP had been high for a few weeks, but she would have let me go another week if I wanted. We ended up doing the c-section later that week. Never had any protein in my urine though. My BP also went right back to normal (actually my normal is pretty low, which is part of why the high BP freaked me out) by the time I left the hospital a few days later.

  • I was hospitalized with high blood pressure at 34 weeks for 3 days.  I had retained a ton of fluid and they were worried that it was going to get too high, but after 3 days of extremely strict bedrest (like ONLY going to the bathroom) it balanced out enough to send me home on the same strict bedrest.  When I went in for an appointment at 35.6 weeks my blood pressure was 159/90 and they had already told me that if it ever got to 160/90 they were going to deliver me right away.  So I had a c-section that night.  After delivery my blood pressure was still high enough that I had to be monitored very closely, but by the next day I was fine.  Good luck! :)
