ditching the passy

Okay moms, here it goes.

I said it would stay around this long...and now 15 months have passed. It started out he only got it at bed and naptime and in the car. Recently he was sick and seemed to have it more. He does ok without it until he sees it then he wants it. I did bite a hole in one of them and he lost interest...but i havent found the best time to completly take it away.

Any suggestions mom's and how long should I expect him to still fuss over it??

Re: ditching the passy

  • You really want to fight this battle during first tri?

If you're going to take it, take it.There isn't really any reason to wait for any special time. I would start with a nap rather than at bedtime. I would expect rough nights for a week or two- but maybe you'll get lucky and it'll only take a night or two.

  • We just went cold turkey a few weeks ago.  The first 2 nights were actually easy and then for some reason, it got worse.  I'd say we had about 2 weeks of adjusting where she just couldn't soothe herself at all (and I now have a new sleep routine) but I'm sooo glad I did it.  good luck!

  • My DD was the same with only sleeping and in the car. We took it away and the first night was really rough (like I was half way into a bottle of wine-to-keep-myself-calm-type-rough!). She eventually fell asleep. Then the next day's naps were tough. The next night she cried for about 20 minutes and went to sleep. next day, naps were no problem and night time she went right to sleep. The car was harder. Probably harder on me than her. She doesn't like riding in the car to begin with and the 'plug' was always a life saver for me when she got upset. Car rides took a bit longer for her to stop screaming. We downloaded some Blue's Clues on our Ipad and put those on for her and that definitely seemed to keep her entertained. Also, if she is really fussy I will give her some puffs or Cheerios and that keeps her quiet.

Good luck! It really is liberating once it's gone!
