Opening and closing hand repeatedly

For the past couple of weeks Dylan will open and close his hand over and over again when he's eating and mostly when he's falling asleep (while eating).  I was wondering if anyone else has  a LO that does that?  It's pretty cute and I just put his lovey on his chest and he kind of does it on the lovey or my t shirt.  But it's very obvious that this is his thing now and I didn't know if others have had a similar experience.

Re: Opening and closing hand repeatedly

  • Isnt that the sign for milk in sign langauge?

Emily pulls her blanket over her face and uncovers it over and over when she is tired...I just wait until she is asleep then take the blanket away

Reece has been doing this recently too but I was thinking it was becuase we are teaching him baby sign and that sign means "milk". Seems like he does it when he is actually hungry too... I am not sure though, it could be a coincidence.

  • Interesting but I didn't teach him that!  made me smile either way.
  • Ava has been doing the same thing recently also, especially on our arms or shirts. we did start teaching her the sign but i hadn't really associated the two, i just thought it was a comfort thing.

  • YES!  Especially when BF (not from the bottle).  Cole has been doing this for about a month.  I was wondering if anyone else experienced this.  I wish I knew why. I agree that it feels cute though.
  • The sign for milk is opening and closing your hand like your squeezing on something, as if you were squeezing a cow's teet!  Ian does it until there's something in his had.  He usually feels around for his lovey, if I have it, or for his burp rag.  I've just started teaching him the sign for milk, because he can make the motion, but I know that's not what he's doing as I just started yesterday.  Have also been teaching him the sign for eat, which he finds to be hilarious for some reason.

  • OMG YES YES YES I just said to DH the other day that I hope this isnt some nervous "tick" or something. He blew me off. Glad other people are experiencing it!

  • JB does this all the time on everything, never really in the air though. I think for him he is experimenting with different textures.

  • DS also does the same thing and we haven't been teaching him to sign.

  • Lucia doesn't do that, but she rubs her right foot against whatever is nearby (the bar of her crib, her mattress, my leg, etc.).  Over and over and over again.  I think repetitive motion is soothing.

  • AJ does this all the time, especially when he's eating or he's in the bath! He's been doing it for almost a month now. I asked the dr about it at his last appointment and he said it was just a self soothing thing that's pretty common

  • Eli did it for awhile, but has stopped. I thought it was just something in the way he was teaching himself to grab/hold things. Now he's more interested in actually grabbing my boob and leaving little scratch marks on them when he eats.
