Heart murmur - anyone else?

DS's pediatrician detected a heart murmur at his two month well baby check this morning. She said the odds are about 90% likely that it's nothing to worry about, but she has ordered a pediatric echocardiogram anyway - we take him in Monday for that. Anyone else had a baby with a heart murmur or who's had this test? How did your LO handle it, and how long did it take?

Re: Heart murmur - anyone else?

  • Our DD does as well, it was detected while she was still inside. She had 2 echoes, one inside one out, she did not have a problem with either. Dr said she will most likely outgrow it. She has zero sideeffects.

  • Did your daughter have to be sedated for the post-natal echo? The facility where DS is having his echo done said mild sedation may be necessary for very young patients, so I am just curious how this will work....
  • DS1 had two at birth and also has a bicuspid arotic valve. The echo at this age is extremely easy. DS1 had his first at 2 days old then another at 6 months. At his year cardio appt the murmurs had totally healed themselves which his cardio doctor siad most do. He still goes to a cardio dcotor once a year b/c of his arotic valve issue and it's a heck of a lot harder getting an echo on a 2-3 yr then a newborn.

DS1 has never been sedated for one and ds2 wasn't sedated for his last year to check to see if he had ds1's issue. They do tell you that so you're prepared in case they can't get the pictures they need.

  • I had one as a small child, not sure how young, and my mom said it was determined to be benign and then disappeared, or at least the could not hear it anymore because an adult I was diagnosed with mitrovalve prolapse, a type of benign murmur, not sure if the two are related.  When DD was a baby, can't remember how old but closer to a year than birth she started turning blue after she ate or when she woke up.  Took her to the pedi's partner and he thought he heard a murmur but our doctor had never heard one so he and our doctor decided she should have an echo even though they were fairly certain it was nothing and not related to her turning blue.  The echo was fine and she was not sedated.  She just laid on the table and the doc talked to her as did DH and I.  The blue thing was determined to basically be from an immature circular system she grew out of it.
