Any other LOs with Cleft Palate?

I have posted only one other time on this board, and had a couple of responses from other mommas of LOs with cleft palate.  My LO was born with both cleft lip and palate.  She had her lip and nose repaired in December at 3 months old, and just had her palate repaired three weeks ago today.  I was wondering about how other LOs did with feeding and drinking.  She is able to eat very well, even table food, but seems to still want baby food quite a bit.  I was wondering if that is normal at this age-should she be off of baby food by now?  Also, I was wondering if your LOs were able to drink out of a sippy cup.  She is still taking 4 bottles a day-we use the pigeon bottle, and try to give her sippy cups with water at mealtime.  She will play with the sippy and bite it, but still doesn't seem to get much out of it.  How can I work with her on learning to get suction, now that her palate is repaired?  Thanks!

Re: Any other LOs with Cleft Palate?

  • Hi! My oldest was born with a unilateral complete cleft lip and palate. I am glad things overall are going welll! My son took a while to start eating table food vs baby food. It was definitely a good couple months post palate repair. He had his at 11 months old. I felt like I was the only one still feeding my 12/13 month old baby food ; also, we never went back to bottles, but they no longer make the sippy cup we used. It was awesome since we could help squeeze he drink into his mouth till he really learned to suck. But my non cleft boys were much harder to transition from bottle to sippy. Just keep trying! Let me know if you have any other questions!
