HypnoBirth virgin

HypnoBirth mamas...how was your pain?  I'm on the fence about committing FULLY to hypnobirth vs epidural aka..the easy road.  I'm open to your feedback if you've done hypnobirth before or for several births...some insight on your experienced ones?

Re: HypnoBirth virgin

  • With DS I had a necessary C/S and let me say the headache from the spinal anesthesia very similar to an epi was far worse than my incision pain and lasted more than a week. I am certain I never want a spinal or epi again unless it is an absolute emergency.

I just had a home birth and can say that it was intense but really not painful. It never crossed my mind to want medication. My labor started with my water breaking, DD was born 21 hours later but really only the last 4 hours were anything near challenging. I did Marie Mongan's Hypnobirthing class and listened to the birth affirmations every night.

  • I'm going to be taking a Hypnobabies course this time so no first hand experience to provide on that, but I also have to say I always see people talk about epidurals as if they're full proof.  Something that everyone should remember is they don't always work.  I had an epidural last time (several actually) and they couldn't get it to work.  It only made things worse and caused a lot of unnecessary interventions and I didn't even get the benefit of pain relief.  It's certainly not a fool-proof option as it's often talked about, things definitely don't always go as planned!

  • Everyone's experience is different of course, but I did Hypnobirthing last time and will this time as well and can say that while labor was intense and required all my concentration it was not painful.  The only part that I can say 'hurt' or would label as actual 'pain' was the last three pushes where I felt the 'ring of fire' and when DD's shoulder got stuck.  Other than that it just felt like really strong tightening, so strong in fact that sometimes it felt hard to breath, but not pain.

If you want my full birth story just PM me and I would be happy to share it with you :)

  • I did hypnobabies, and have since discovered I don't have a very good hypnosis induction profile. Labor was not horridly painful, just very very intense.  I ended up getting an epidural at about 5 cm dilated because I could not resist the urge to push. Every contraction my body was involuntarily trying to push. I knew I was going to cause my cervix to swell if I kept doing that, and didn't want to end up with a c-section, so I requested an epidural. Mine worked amazingly well (but did probably slow down labor).

Knowing that I don't hypnotize well (which I didn't realize you could investigate ahead of time, google hypnosis induction profile), I'm not sure if I'll try it again this time around. I'm thinking about having a doula.
