Prepping prefolds

I ordered two sets of the Jillian's Drawers samples to try out CDing on my 6 month old, so I have a total of 8 prefolds. The directions say to wash and dry 3-5 times before using them, but it seems so wasteful with such a tiny load.

 I think I remember reading that there's a way to prep the by boiling... How long in the water? And does that really work?
