Cloth Diapering

Newbie

Hi! I'm mostly a lurker but have a 13month old boy who I'm going to start CDing! I'm waiting for my BG's in the mail and am so excited. I was thinking I want to make my own wipes and will use extra baby wash cloths that I have, how do you make the solution? Also I just bought detergent fr sprouts called country save. How many scoops do you typically use and just to get this straight, you rinse in cold and then do a normal wash in hot? Is it the rinse where you keep doing it until suds are gone? I will hang on clothes line outside to dry. Thanks for help!

Re: Newbie

  • Welcome! I use Country Save and use 1/2 scoop in my front load HE machine. I have normal (not hard) water. I think the box recommends a full scoop for regular top loaders.

My wash routine is quick hot wash/cold rinse no detergent, regular hot wash with detergent and two cold rinses (my machine has an option for an extra rinse). Most people do their prewash/rinse in cold as you mentioned.

For a wipe solution I put a couple of drops of almond oil and lavender essential oil into a peri bottle of water. You can use plain water as well, or water with a little baby wash.

Have fun with your new fluff!

  • For  wipes I usually make a jar (old spaghetti jar) of green tea with 2 bags and ad a big spoonful of honey and almond oil or coconut oil. Note- just enough oil so that it helps wipes smoothly.

I just got some CJ's Carcass Cleaner (CJ's BUTTer is my favorite CD safe rash cream) which I have heard good things about using for wipes solution so I used it in my green tea to try out. It worked well and smelled great!

For washing I use Rockin Green and a HE front loader...Remember that if you use an HE machine to use less detergent!

  • I use baby washcloths for cloth wipes, so if you have enough of those, there's no need to make wipes.  I use plain old water, and it's worked great so far.

My wash routine is a cold prerinse, hot wash w/ detergent, cold rinse, cold second rinse.  I personally use All Free and Clear, but I use half up to the line recommended for a smalll load.

  • We use baby washcloths as well, with plain ole water, works great for us. I put three or four at a time damp in the wipes warmer so they don't sit there too long and get funky. Our wash routine is everyother day to every 3 days. Cold prerinse no detergent. Hot wash with tide original powder. Cold rinse, cold extra rinse. We line dry everything outside when possible, or inside on a rack. Then throw anything without PUL in the dryer with wool dyer balls to soften them.
