Changing dc at 1 year - what to expect?

We're switching DD from her current dc to my #1 pick when I was pregnant a few days after she turns 1.  She'll be going from her infant room where she's at now to a ones room at the new dc.  I just wondered what I might expect?

She is pretty attached to her dc teachers now in the infant room, and she's in that leave-me-with-anyone-but-mommy/daddy/or one of the two usual infant teachers and-I'll-cry phase.  So, I'm a little worried about the whole transition, but I keep telling myself she'd have to transition to a new room anyway...

I'm just kind of curious about how smoothly (or not) this could go.

Re: Changing dc at 1 year - what to expect?

  • We switched daycare centers when DD was 10 months old.  We moved across the country with our jobs.  I was worried about this as well.  I actually bawled when we left her first daycare b/c we all LOVED her teachers so mcuh.

I found that it took a few weeks.  Maybe a month, but DD chose her favorite teachers again and became just as attached to them in her new classroom.  I fell in love with her new teachers as well.

DD was an early walker, so within a few months we had to switch her to the pre-toddler classroom and it was the same thing all over again. As soon as they get comfortable with their new teachers, routine, etc.  they adjust really well.

I think it makes us more nervous than it should and they do just fine.  Now I know DD will be where she is for almost another year, so I am very happy about that.

  • The adjustment may be difficult but keep in mind it's temporary. I would imagine the big difference for this age would be sleeping on mats, one mid-day nap, table w/chairs at meal times and outdoor play. At this age/in this yr, they usually introduce utensils and cups w/o lids.

  • We switched our DD at 11 months to my #1 choice (exact same situation).  I was worried about it but it went great.  Didn't really phase her and we LOVE the new center (she's just leaving now at almost 5 to start preschool and my DS is there now).  Course she's always been a pretty easy-going kid, but just wanted to tell you it could all go much more smoothly than you are anticipating.
