DD got a "goose egg".... Advice please!

DD#1 just ran, fell, and banged her forehead off of the kitchen table. :( It immediately swelled to the size of a ping pong ball lad bruised.  She has been putting ice on it, gave her some Tylenol, and she is now lying next to me on the couch. I talked to a friend, who is a nurse, and he says that as long as she doesn't have concussion type symptoms she is fine. I, of course, am a wreck.  DD says she feels fine other than the lump (which has gone down in size) hurts.  Should I take her to the ER, call the doctor, or am I just over reacting? Anyone have any experience with this or advice? TIA!

  • It sounds like she's ok. If it turns to a goose egg quickly it's usually fine. It's the soft lump that appears after an hour or two that you need to worry about. As long as she doesn't show signs of a concusion, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I'm sure she,s fine. As long as she didn't lose cons iousness, stopped crying within a few and there is no confusion or vomiting. I fell carrying DD when she was 5mos. And she hit the back of her head. I made DH call the pedi because I was hysterical. They asked those questions and said she was fine. DD hit her head at daycare while playing and needed a stitch a couple months ago. I took her to ER again they asked those questions and she was fine ;) don worry, this s just the first of many heart attacks we will hav as moms ;)
  • She is more than likely fine.  The fact that the goose egg swelled out and is not dented in is a very good sign.  I would not take her in unless she vomits or shows signs of a concusion.  Just keep an eye on her. My DS is very accident prone and has had too many goose eggs to count.
  • I agree with all of the PP's. Z smacked the hell out of her head by falling off of her chair and hitting our concrete floor. I checked her for concussion and called the Dr's office. They said that I had checked everything that they would have and to just watch her for vomiting and/or difficulties walking or slurring.

ETA: I'm sorry that you are dealing with this though. I know how scary it can be sometimes! I hope your DD feels better soon!

  • DS knocked his head on his sippy cup earlier this week while running around and tripping.  He has a bruise on his forehead and had the start of a goose egg, but I iced it down a little because he wanted to snuggle in my lap after anyway.

  • Overreacting. DD smacked her head on the tile floor this evening and it turned into an immediate bump and bruise and it never even occured to me to ice it or give her drugs. I kissed it better and distracted her with toys.
