Natural Birth

Being induced Friday

Hi everyone,

Due to the size of our little guy, ultrasound today measured him at over 10lbs they are inducing me this Friday.  I have taken the classes for hypnobirthing and would really like to still try to have as natural as a birth as possible.  I am only dialated 1.5 centimeters and the baby is not very engaged.  Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with being induced and still having a pain med free birth?

Thank you!

Leah

Re: Being induced Friday

  • My advice would be to push back and not go for an induction. Start weekly or twice weekly NST's and BPPs, but push back for at least a week and see how things go. Ultrasounds at the end of pregnancy are notoriously inaccurate* and can be off up to two pounds in either direction. Induction for "suspected big baby" happens quite a bit when it shouldn't. Also, if your Bishop score isn't favorable, it can set you up for a c/s bc you won't progress on the hospital's timetable. Given that baby isn't engaged and you say you're only 1.5cm dilated, I would guess your Bishop score isn't in a place where induction is likely to work.

*If your baby has been measuring very large for your entire pregnancy and/or you have GD that could make him bigger than "normal" that would be an entirely different story.

     Good luck!!

  • If you and baby are healthy and well, and you're not at 42 weeks my advice would also be to push back the induction. Once you're on pit your chance of a c-section skyrockets. I was induced and while I am completely aware every birth is different, I would not recommend it to anyone else. Best of luck to you! I hope baby comes on their own soon!!

  • I completely agree to push back first.  That said, if you are induced it is still possible to deliver without pain meds.  I was induced with my first 12 dys after my due date when my water broke.  One thing I wished someone had told me is that you CAN ask for the pit to be turned down.  My contractions started 10 minutes after starting pit and lasted 1.5 min with only a half minute off between contractions.  I did this for 8 hours and then pushed for 40 minutes before delivering.  It was like being tortured.  Abby was 7 lb 8 oz.  My second child I went COMPLETELY med free and my son was 9 lb. 9 oz and it was like nothing compared to my daughter b/c of the pit.  My best advice going into a pit induction is to remain FOCUSED.  Mind over matter.  Good luck.  You CAN do it, you just need to decide to.

  • I agree with previous two post. Push it back! I was induced with my first due to preclamsia. Would never wish that on anyone unless its truly medically necessary. Ultrasounds are often very wrong on size. As long as everything else is looking good, wait. Let the baby decide when its time!
  • I agree with the first post that u/s assessments are notoriously inaccurate, unless you've been measured extremely often.  With weekly u/s, they can get a good estimate.  Less than that and things start to vary widely.
  • I'm currently in the hospital being induced for pre-e. My bishops score was moderate and I've already had a vaginal birth. We are currently on hour 30 and we still haven't been able to get me into labor even with the Pitocin. My body just isn't responding to medications and my son won't drop so they can't break my water. It's been an incredibly frustrating experience. If there's not a very clear medical reason for your induction I would suggest telling your doctor that you're not ready for an induction.
