Preemies

When did you go on your first car trip?

How old was your preemie before you took your first car trip?  If it matters the trip in question won't be occuring for a few months, but is about 6 hours long.  We'd obviously stop every couple hours and we'll definitely talk to the pedi first.

  • He was five months and the trip was two hours there and almost five back - thanks, Hurricane Irene!

  • My family lives about 45 minutes to an hour away and we started doing those trips around 3 months old. Our longest with our oldest was 6-9 hours when she was 18 months old. We have yet to actually take a long car ride w/ DD#2. She hates the car at the moment.  We plan to fly next month though. I'll take a 2 hour plane ride over 14 hours in the car any day.

  • At 5 months, we drove halfway across the county and back. 24 hours each way (split into 2 days).

  • We are planning a big trip back to my side of the family in September... our baby will only be 7 months actual, 4.5 months adjusted, and unfortunately it's either going to be a plane ride (dreading that b/c airplanes = instant sickness so many times, not to mention the air pressure on his ears!) OR a 9-10-hour drive each way. I think it almost would've been easier to do this when he was the equivalent of a newborn and was sleeping all day.

  • Every scenario and baby is different of course, but our daughter when on a 9 hour drive when she was 2 months old.  She was even on an apnea monitor.  We had prior approval from our pediatrician.  We live 9 hours from the closest family (we recently relocated before baby came) and we wanted to have her baptized in the church we grew up in and married in.

So if you feel your baby is ready and you as parents are ready then it will be just fine.  She slept great and we fed every 3 hours.     Good Luck.

  • We've done random hour here and there drives since  4months old but our first somewhat big road trip will be almost 4 hours when they're 8 months old and then we're planning on doing a HUGE road trip 18 hours (to disney) when they're a little over a year. SO anxious about that one, but i've heard leaving right after their bed time bottle so they sleep most of the trip is the route to go.
