Hypnobabies vs. Hypnobirthing (Did Bradley Last Time)

There is a difference in Hypnobabies and Hypnobirthing, correct?  Does anyone recommend one over the other?

We did the full series of Bradley classes when I was pregnant with DS and they were wonderful and DH was wonderful, but what I learned about myself once I was in labor was that my DH was annoying me, making it harder for me to focus, and I had no internal ways to cope.  (And I feel horrible saying that - because he was SO GREAT in every way . . . It just wasn't working for me.)

Just looking to add a little something different to my prep this time.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Hypnobabies vs. Hypnobirthing (Did Bradley Last Time)

  • Did you tell him it wasn't working? I don't know about the hypnostuff personally. I am doing home Bradley stuff this time (reading books) but I had to have the "hard" talk with my hubby about stepping up and helping me this time. I also told him if I don't like what he is doing I will tell him to stop and not to take it personally if I snap and say just SHUT UP! Because I won't know how or what I really want till I going through it as every labor is different. I would grab a little bit of everything you can get your hands on and see if anything jumps out as would have been helpful last time.

  • I'm currently 3 weeks into a 5 week Hypnobirthing course.  From what I understand, Hypnobabies is a "knock-off" of the original hypnobirthing method (Mongan method).  At least this is what our instructor told us!  I have been listening to both relaxation hypnosis sessions on my iPod.  The hypnobirthing method is recorded my Marie Mongan, who is a bit elderly, and I have to admit her voice kind of cracks in parts and it's a little annoying.  The hypnobabies recording is a younger woman (the founder, I forget her name) and her voice is much more tolerable, though she has you open your eyes & I'm not a fan of that.

Though I can't say what the fundamental difference is between the two methods, I can say that so far I am happy with hypnobirthing.  Both have websites, google them & check it out - ultimately it might make sense to go with the method that offers classes near you and/or "feels" the best.  I don't think you could go wrong with either.

FYI - the hypnobabies track is free on their website - not sure about the other one, it was given to us in class.

Oh yes, I told him.  LOL.  Not very nicely.  In fact, he was taking notes and some of the things I said to him in labor (which I don't remember at all) were hilarious.  I was really rude to him, and it's not like me at all.  He knew not to take it personally - we laugh about it SO much now.  But, literally EVERYTHING he was trying wasn't working, and I was beyond frustrated.

I rely on him so much for support through most difficult situations, that I thought for sure that his encouragement, reminders ("breathe," "take a sip of water," etc), counter-pressure techniques, etc would help me . . .  But apparently labor just turns me into a witch!  :)

As much as I know that I couldn't control what I did and didn't want when my pain was that intense, I feel terrible for him.  It definitely was not what either of us expected.  Hence looking for more internal ways to cope this time.

  • I'm planning to take a hypnobirthing course this time (lower case H on purpose :) ) and after some research I decided to go with Hypnobabies over Hypnobirthing.  I don't necessarily know that one method is really going to be much different/better than another, but just from what I was able to read from people who have done both (and even taught both) Hypnobabies is supposedly a little more comprehensive, they claim to have a higher rate of success (but I take this with a grain of salt), some Hypnobirthing instructors decided to switch to Hypnobabies once they got the instructor program going (at one point it was home study only).

Because I have access to both courses and just based on personal experiences I read about online I feel like Hypnobabies is the better option.  Not that I actually know anything, that's just the impression I get :)

  • I'm currently doing the hypnobabies course and am really liking it. It does require a bit of a time commitment and I admit I'm not always good about listening to the self hypnosis tracks 30 min a day but I do listen to the daily affirmations daily which I think really helps my attitude towards pregnancy and childbirth. When I was originally looking into the differences between hypnobirthing and hypnobabies, a lot of others' feedback was that if you're going to go with hypnobirthing, it's best to take an actual class. I really like the at-my-own-pace module the hypnobabies course lays out. It makes it more flexible and I still feel like it's very beneficial but we shall see after this LO arrives as I've never actually given birth before!!

  • Hypnobabies was developed by a former Bradley and Hypnobirthing instructor. She combined what she thought was the best of both while incorporating Gerald Kein's painless childbirth techniques. This explains how she developed it https://www.hypnobabies.com/mylink.php?id=3802

PS I did the Hypnobabies home study course and loved it.

  • Hypnobabies offers Eyes Open Childbirth Hypnosis. This means that a mom can talk to her birth team, move around to help baby descend all while being completely comfortable and in deep hypnosis. Hypnobabies uses **REAL** medical grade hypno anesthesia. It is not simple deep relaxation with guided imagery and visualizations. Moms go into the somnambulistic state of hypnosis which is responsible for creating the sensations of a tightening like a blood pressure cuff being tightened, pressure, pulling, or pressure. Being totally comfortable from the tops of my breasts to the middle if my thighs is why I chose Hypnobabies over Hypnobirthing. It is also very in depth and comprehensive. All of the wonderful information that is evidenced based really helped me feel sooo confident about childbirth and how to be an informed consumer making the best choices for my family. I have had two Hypnobabies births and both were different and both were comfortbable, intense at times but all of the tools I learned helped make it such a wonderful, empowering, and comfortable births. Love Hypnobabies... Can't say enough good things about it. Really transformed me as a confident birthing woman to a confident mother.

This.  I completely agree.  I am a DEVOUT Hypnobabies believer.  I had a wonderful birth, and I can't say enough good things.  #2 will, of course be a "Hypnobaby"  In addition to the Hypnosis, there are so many wonderful tools and so much information for mothers about pregnancy, birth and newborn care.

I still use the techniques and some tracks in "real life".  Peaceful Sleep Now puts our whole family to sleep in minutes.  Literally. The Bubble of Peace is keeping me so happy.

I don't have any experience with other birthing methods, because Hypnobabies was perfect for me.

  • I used Hypnobabies for the birth of my first baby and I am taking the class again as I prepare for the birth of my second.  I have not used other methods, although I started a Bradley class with my first and dropped out to join Hypnobabies after doing more research and I feel it was the best decision I could have made for myself.  I had the most wonderful birth experience using Hypnobabies and the daily practice and affirmations really transformed my attitude during pregnancy in such a wonderful way.  I became so confident and so informed and aware of what I wanted out of my pregnancy and birth because of their course.  I loved the fact that I could choose to have my eyes open using what they call "Eyes Open Childbirth Hypnosis".  I was able to move around as much as I needed and walk and talk while still using my hypnosis tools because of this.  I also felt that my husband was fully "trained" and knew exactly what his role was.  He was so in tune with me and what I wanted and needed because we had practiced together so much. I felt he was an amazing support when I needed him to be because he knew how to read all my signs and knew exactly when to back off and let me just do my thing.  I don't think he would have been so in tune with me if it had not been for the incredibly bonding experience of taking the Hypnobabies class and practicing together.  I know I can speak for my husband on this and say that his favorite part of the class aside from the bonding we did as a couple was how much he was able to bond with our baby in the process by reading the scripts and being such an active part of the pregnancy. I followed my heart and went with Hypnobabies and that was what was right for me.  You should do what feels right for you!  Hypnobabies has a website with tons of information and I'm sure you could always contact a local instructor who can tell you more about it too if you're interested.    Best wishes to you!
  • I did the Hypnobabies Home Study course and will do it with every baby that I have. I am a BELIEVER!! I don't think I would have had the outcome I had if I would have chose a different method of Childbirth education. I don't think you can go wrong with it. The "eye open childbirth hypnosis" is what allows you to move around and be mobile during your birthing time while still being Deep in Hypnosis. It is what I believe makes so many women very successful with having a comfortable birth. Hypnobabies has everything you need when it comes to childbirth education. It is more information than you would learn anywhere else. good luck mama!
