Short Cervix- 31 weeks

I went to L&D this weekend with contractions. They were able to stop them with shots and an IV. However, when they checked my cervix, the nurse said it was short. I didn't think about it, and my OB didn't say anythng when he got there. Now, I remember, at my 20 wk A/S the report said my cervix was elongated. Should it be "short" at 31 weeks? I started to Google but that was scary.. I have an appt with my OB next week, but just wanted to check if anyone else had any insight.

 thank you!!

Re: Short Cervix- 31 weeks

  • Did they tell you the length? I was diagnosed with short cervix at 27w and mine keeps getting shorter. It was 2.1 last Wednesday and I was given steroids for my baby's lung development. I'm also on moderate bed rest, restricted activities and seeing a high risk dr. If the drs weren't concerned, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I forgot to mention my cervix is also funnelling which is a problem.

  • No, they did not tell me the length. I really like my OB but he never really tells me anything. He never told me I had AP or an early SCH (my body ending up absorbing it, luckily), I found that out from pulling lab reports. I guess he's not concerned.

I forgot to mention, I hope everything turns out ok for you! Just get to 37 weeks :). My OB said that was his goal for me.

  • It depends on all sorts of factors.  If it's bothering you enough to post about it, I would call your dr this morning to follow up.  He's the only one right now who can put your mind at ease and explain to you why he's ok with it.   And avoid google - it's all worse case, doom and gloom!

  • Stay off google. My peri said that we don't regularly monitor women at 31 weeks for cervical length. Without contractions and a L&D visit, you wouldn't have even known that it was "short". I'd want to know the exact measurement and go from there. In all honesty, I'd call so he can put your mind at ease. For me, they were happy with anything over 2.5cm. I'm not sure if the same thing applies for a singleton pg though.

  • I would call your doctor and follow up.  See how short "short is"  and if there is anything you are suppose to do or not do or any follow up needed.  I'm high risk but the docs like my cervix to be over 3 cm.  Hope everything works out ok.

. I was also told that over 3cm was good.  I would just ask your doctor what exactly they meant by short and go from there.

  • I would want to know the length. Mine was 1.8 at 30 weeks but was given an FFN test at 31 weeks which was negative. My doc says that most women with a negative FFN go on to deliver at full term. Bed rest is the best thing you can do. Try not to worry. I know thats easier said then done.
