Pregnant after 35

Registrey question

DH and I are going to register in the next few weeks. I am wondering from all the moms out there if there are items you registered for that you discovered you really did not need?  Is there anything that you  can't live without?

Thanks

Re: Registrey question

  • Oddly enough, we wound up with way too many wash clothes. Maybe we just did laundry too often. We also wound up with a lot of blankets. (But that might also be attributed to a lot of surprise homemade quilts and afghans from friends and family.)

Can't live without? Wipes heater. Especially for the cold winter months. I've heard this is even more useful with a boy (something we look forward to finding out this winter. Smile)

  • Things I couldn't live without... extra sheets for the crib. We needed to change them a lot more often that we expected to.

Wipe warmers seem to be really popular, but even with my boy, I never felt the need... I stuck the wipes in my bra while I got  his pants off, and onsie unsnapped... by the time the diaper was off, the wipes were always warm.

  • IMO you don't need a wipe warmer or a bottle sterilizer.

Items I could not live without:

    bouncy chair

    Snugli carrier

    bath sling

    mitts and hats

lots of washcloths, towels and receiving blankets

    PNP

    and

if you get one of these, make sure you get 2 so that you can throw one in the wash.  DS loves his, but we only have one (have tried 2 other similar ones, but he won't take them) and it is a nightmare to take it from him long enough to wash it.

It's a little blankie with an animal head attached, the animal has a rattle in it's head.

We just picked up 2 of exactly the same one so that we can switch them out with washing for baby #2.

Also, if you have a friend who is a recent new mom, you might want to go out and look at stuff with her before planning your registry trip with DH.  There is so much stuff out there, it can be really overwhelming when you are trying to figure out what you really need.  I went with my BFF and got and idea of what I needed and liked and then went with DH to do the actual registry.  Have fun!

  • FTR, I never had a wipe warmer with DS and he NEVER and I mean NEVER peed on me from the draft.  When I changed him, I just took the new diaper and layed it open under him when he was still in his old diaper.  I would undo the tapes and let a little air in while still keeping his parts covered for a second, then I'd wipe him down with a room temp wipe, clean him up, remove the soiled diaper, lube him up with zinc or vaseline and do up the clean diaper.

Also, living in Canada and being out and about all the time, wipe warmers aren't that portable and I have needed to change DS all over the place, I didn't want him spoiled with warm wipes at home and having to use cooler wipes, when out and about, so I just didn't bother.  He never seemed to mind.  I was even offered a free wipe warmer from a friend and I declined.

  • With all my kids I always had too many blankets. Also I never once used that stupid baby bathtub, and it was a pain in the butt to store when not in use.

I wouldn't bother with those little hand mittens or pacifiers. None of my kids could stand them. And if you do need them, you can easily get them. Also there are so many different nipple shapes in bottles and pacifiers you never know what baby will prefer.

Must have is a good sling carrier and front pack carrier are a must for me.

  • Thanks all for the suggestions. This helps me. Hope to register in the next week or so.

  • Glad we had: Rompers with long arms and feet that zipped because buttons and separate pants and shirts are a total pain to take on and off. A wipe warmer it was a cold January and the damp paper towels we used at first in place of wipes stayed cold. A secure seat to place him in outside of the bathroom where I could see him so I could shower, etc.
And eventually a play mat because that became his favorite activity. Also comfortable clothes for me!

Could have lived without: a basinette because I should have just went with a moses basket. A jogging stroller totally a waste and I should have waited to pick out any stroller until after the baby was born...months after...because we mostly used our Snap n Go with carseat to run to any store. It was January in Jersey and we werent going for any walks outside for a while. Any type of expensive swing or fancy bouncer because he had refux and hated to bounce, swing or vibrate it just made him spit up.
