ICI at home - Motility question!

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are trying to get pregnant, and we were planning on ordering one vial of MOT 10 sperm.  We have ordered two vials twice before but can't afford to keep up with that.  MOT 5 (lower motility) is less expensive and it just occurred to me that it might be a better idea to order TWO vials of MOT 5 instead.  Does anyone have any thoughts/advice?

Thank you!!!

Re: ICI at home - Motility question!

  • "Motility" refers to movement but "Motile sperm" as in 5 vs 10 are counts in millions and therefore refer to avg/est total number of motile sperm per sample.

    Sometimes it's based on a standardized scale where MOT5 = 2.5 million to 5 million and MOT10 = 5 million to 9.5 million.

Personally, our bank doesn't differentiate in pricing based on count, only minimums which are 10 mil total, which seems to be the standard recommendation of many fertility clinics for insemination. If I were in your place, I would compare pricing and then I think it would come down to confidence in timing. If you feel confident about timing and are only doing 1 insem, and the I would definitely do the MOT10 and hope it had at least 5mil but ideally closer to the 9.5mil, and that they would be able to make it to the egg in a timely manner.

If I were uncertain about timing and wanted to try to spread out the odds, I would *maybe* consider doing two 5MOT insems with the presumption that some sperm would get the job done and make it to the egg and I would be increasing the time range for that to happen. You're basically looking at increasing timing with lower numbers of active sperm.

So, do you feel confident about ovulation timing? How are you tracking/charting?

  • I am actually feeling kind of shaky about timing.. Last time we tried - last fall - something went wrong with the shipment (delivery service to blame :( ) and I think that stressing out might have caused me to ovulate later than I should have. Because I knew we wouldn't be able to try again for a while, I only began charting again a few months ago. For the past two months I have surged on day 14, (positive OPK and high soft cervix). I haven't been taking my basal temp but now I am regretting it!

    Thanks for responding!!
