  • Not really but at some point whatever you are changing on will get peed or pooped on. If you are ok with washing sheets because they got pooped on while you are changing the baby on the bed then you are fine.

I put a pad on my dresser and have used it like 2 times. I just change him wherever we are at the moment. That works for us but everyone is different.

  • Not necessary at all.  We just put the changing pad (actually I wrote about ours in the post right below this) on the dresser.  You could put it on the floor too.  Or honestly, you can just change baby on a waterproof mat on the floor or bed!  Our PNP came with a changing table on it too so that was handy sometimes as well.

  • I put a changing pad on the dresser and I have used it every single day since LO was born, and still use it.

I don't think a seperate table in needed, but i would definitely dedicate a seperate place for changing, even if it is the pad on the floor.  LO does so much better when he is on his pad, he lets us change him with out issues.

When we are out of town and have to change him on the bed or floor, he squirms and rolls and does everything he can to get away during changing.  It is a huge pain in the butt.

  • Nope.  We've used a changing pad on the floor.  We've changed the kids on top of a receiving blanket on the floor and couch.  I think the only time we do use the changing table, which is a changing table and dresser combo is in the morning when we're changing DS out of his jammies.

  • I've never owned a change table. We use changing mats/pads, it works well. Change tables really aren't practicle in the long run and I don't find any very attractive.
  • Just make sure you have *something* that's the correct height.  We thought we were just going to change her on the bed and a low bench in the living room.  Ouch!  Our backs couldn't take that.  So we are using a console table (same height) as a changing table now and our backs are feeling much better.

  • Our Pack N Play has a changing station that we've been using.  We do have a changing table for the nursery, which we haven't used yet, but the dresser is a tall one and wouldn't work for changing!

  • We have used ours every single day since he was born. I like having a dedicated space just for diaper/clothing changes but I am a very "everything in its place" type person.

  • No you don't need a "changing table" per se.  But we have always used a designated space for changing DS (which we are still doing because he won't use the potty!)

We just put the changing pad on top of his dresser in his room (the Ikea Hemnes).

Like PP's have said, I wanted a good height, I am not down with getting on the floor or leaning over a bed multiple times a day to change diapers.

  • I was thinking about skipping it but I found one used that matched our crib.  I'm glad I bought it.  I could have put the pad on the dresser but that would mean not being able to put much else on there.  Also, the changing table gives us quite a bit of storage because it has shelves.  I have 6 canvas bins on them that we use for diapers, diaper genie bags, burp cloths, receiving blankets, etc.

This, except we do not have a specific changing table.  We use a low dresser with changing pad on top.  I have changed her there every time since we came home.

  • I was wondering this as well... so I've been considering a portable one that I found on ikea....  https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00147337/

  • When we're home I don't change my kids anywhere except the changing table and never have. I would either get a changing table or a low dresser and put a changing pad on top.

We have that changing table in our nursery and LOVE it!  Unfortunately, our house is two-story and we're lazy... so it only gets used for overnight changes.  Daytime changes all happen on the couch with a waterproof changing pad.

    This.

One time, my kid exploded poop when I opened her diaper. It went everywhere within three feet of her butt. Changing pad, wall, lamp, side table, floor.

Just imagine for a minute what that would be like if I had been changing her on, say, my bed.

My answer is yes. And I mean that you should have a designated changing area for baby that is the right height and that is not your bed or couch or expensive persian rug. We used a pad on a dresser and she still gets changed there every.single.time. Unless we are out of the house, of course.
