Flying with a toddler....

Any recommendations for flying with an almost 3 year old?  It will be a short-ish flight, CA to CO.  I'm planning on taking his stroller and car seat, but I was going to gate check them.  Should I keep the seat for the flight?  We have the Graco Argos, so it's kinda big, and I'm questioning if it will fit right on the seat.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • I would gate check the stroller and car seat, if its not FAA approved they won't let you use it anway.

My DS loves flying and does a good job of being entertained by his surroundings.  My tips are of coure, using the potty before you get on the plane and regular potty visits!  Treats!  Those candies you never want to give him/her, now is the time :)  My DS love iPads so I down load a new Mickey game.

    Good luck and have fun!

  • We checked the car seat upon airport arrival. We gate checked the car seat.

  • Check Amazon for a FAA approved kid seatbelt. It just attaches to the regular seat belt and was waaaay easier than carrying a car seat on the plane.

  • If you do gate check it, put the carseat in a bag of some sort and remove the cup holder ( I don't know if your type of carseat has built in cup holders or the ones that can be taken out), but it was something we didn't think of and they ended up losing our cup holder.

  • Checking your carseat on an airplane essentially "crashes" it and it would need to be replaced.  Your best bet would be to use it on the plane, or if you have to check it pack it in a cardboard box with some padding to keep it safe.

Totally agree with this.  We actually bought cheap Costco ones because we decided they were just for traveling.  No way were we bringing our nice seats and the one time I tried to rent it did NOT work out well (dirty, old, crappy seats).

My kids love stickers and markers and paper.  I bought hard binders and hole-punched a ton of paper for them so they could use the hard surface to write on if we folded the top of the binder back.  That entertained them for a long time.  I also bought them candy necklaces which they had never had.  Success!  Haha.

  • If it's not sleep time then I'd check the carseat. and definitely GATE check it, so that it gets beat up less by the baggage handlers

check out the CARES harness - it's for 2-4 year olds, and turns an airplane seat into a safe seat for toddlers

I bring lots of stuff for dd to do on planes, stickers, dvd player, coloring, small toys, and LOTS of snacks

    GL!
