Themes for 5th b-day party?

DS1 will be 5 on 9/15, we're going to have his party 3w later on 10/6 because of where he wants to have it (they don't do any events before 10/1 and the first Saturday is 10/6).  It's going to be at a local pumpkin patch that has a large playground.  Is a theme needed, should I just let him pick it out, should I just do certain colors as a "theme"?  Thoughts?

Re: Themes for 5th b-day party?

  • When I think of themes, I think of coordinating decorations, plates, napkins, goody bags,etc...either by character, another noun(trains, circus) or color.  I don't think a theme is necessary and it's probably less work on the host when planning. I bet your DS would love to pick out random items. As an attendee, I definitely would not side eye you if you did not have a theme. The pumpkin patch and free play time at the playground sounds like a lot of fun!

  • I would let him pick it out.  Themes arent needed but maybe there's something he wants.

  • The theme is the place in my mind - the party is at a pumpkin patch - what more do you need.  Get fall colored plates or things with pumpkins on them if you really feel like everything needs to match.  Honestly, he is 5 - let him pick out an invite he loves and who cares if it matches anything else - same with the cake.  The only person that will care or even notice a theme is you and maybe a few of the parents but the party is for your 5 year old - let the 5 year old pick.  If you really want everything to match, make some suggestions to your child but its his party.

  • My DD has a Sept birthday as well.  We have occasionally put off her party until October because the start of school is so hectic.

I LOVE when we do this because it automatically gives the party a fall/Halloween theme.  The stores are loaded with fall stuff and spooky stuff.  I would just make the theme "pumpkins" unless your DS has an absolute favorite show or character and is going to be heartbroken not to have that character as the mascot of the party.
