Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Gerber yogurt

I am an admittedly clueless mom!  My LO has been eating Gerber banana and pear yogurt for about a week now.  If he is tolerating this well-no allergies, etc., can he eat regular yogurt or is there something different about baby yogurt?  How about my fave, greek yogurt?

Re: Gerber yogurt

  • Greek yogurt would probably be okay, minus all the sugary, syrupy add-ons many of them have. I would just avoid any with lots of sugar, and any with artificial, chemical sweeteners.

  • I always give DD plain full fat Greek yogurt.  She loves it! I usually stir in a tiny bit of mashed fruit (banana or blueberries are big hits) to cut the tartness.

Yes this. The lactose in yogurt (and cheese) is already broken down unlike in straight WCM. That's why it's okay to offer yogurt as early as 6months. My little one loves Greek Yogurt. I usually freeze it and use it as a dessert. You can always take plain yogurt and add strawberries, blueberries etc.

  • Yes it's fine. Just make sure it's made with whole milk. I would avoid the ones with tons of sugar too.

  • I do the Stonyfield Baby yogurt, which DS loves. I tried plain greek yogurt last night, as it's all I had in the house...yeah, bad move. He threw up!

  • The difference I've seen is that baby yogurt is made with whole milk. Not sure about greek yogurt but I would check and make sure it's made with whole milk before giving it to your LO.

It doesn't matter what brand of yogurt you use, baby yogurt is just a gimmick. As long as it is full fat and plain, you are good to go. I think adding your own fruit, if you choose, is better b/c there is way less sugar.

Agree with this. I give my LO Dannon Pure or Dannon All Natural Yogurt and she loves it, especially with some pureed fruit mixed in. Not sure if it's full fat though....

I looked at the ingredients of Gerber yogurt AND tasted it....not very good. It was tart and weird in texture. That was when I decided to go for the yogurt I like.

I'm with you on this.  A shelf stable yogurt CANNOT be natural and/or healthy IMO.  I give stoneyfield organic plain whole milk.

Shelf-stable milk products are FINE.  Good lord.  Almost all of Europe drinks shelf stable milk.  It is just pasteurized at a higher temperature.

ANY yogurt is fine as long as it is whole milk.  The holier than thou "just give plain yogurt and NEVER add extra sugar" responses always make my head spin.  If you add your own fruit puree, you are adding sugar to it.  Also, milk has natural sugar in it.

So, Gerber is fine.  Plain greek whole is fine.  Yobaby is fine.  Any yogurt that is whole milk "added sugars" or not is fine.
