Hospital will not give hospital tours

I was really disappointed when I called my hospital last week and found out they will not give hospital tours anymore. The have a "virtual tour" online, but it's just a few pictures of the rooms. I know this is a relatively recent change because I have a friend who delivered at the same hospital 3 years ago and she was given a tour. I am more interested in finding out the hospital policies with L&D and their routine newborn procedures than about seeing the rooms. I really just want someone to answer my questions. I told them this and am having the hardest time getting answers even to who I should speak with! I've also scoured the website several times and found nothing. Does anyone know who I would need to ask for or how I can find the policies? This is really frustrating!

Re: Hospital will not give hospital tours

  • My hospital doesn't give tours. Honestly, I see why. It seems like a massive waste of resources.

Talk to your doctor first, and then talk to some moms that have given birth recently. You'll get better information from them than nursing staff anyway, likely. Go to a La Leche League meeting and chat up the new moms. Smile

  • What sort of policy questions do you have?  Just routine questions about baby care and such should be able to be addressed by a labor/delivery nurse or your midwife/OB.

I know that our hospital has a hard time letting a mom go home before 12+ hours after the birth and wants to keep the baby for 24-48 hours, but I only know that from talking with the midwives/OBs that deliver there and not the actual nurses.  However, I got a much better feel of the place from our hospital tour than from their online videos, so maybe you could talk with a head nurse on the labor/delivery floor to get a good idea of procedures or take an evening birth/newborn class at the hospital to ask the questions.

Crazy that they don't have set tours anymore...even if they are only 2 times per month or something.

  • I would talk to you doc/mw.  We had trouble because I was pregnant with my daughter during H1N1.  DH and I had both been vaccinated, so we talked to my MW who was willing to just take us up there so we could look around.  Worth a try!
  • I actually do the tours at our local hospital.  I would call and find out who was responsible for the tours prior to them discontinuing and maybe start there?  But really, the basic stuff can be answered by your doctor or midwife.

This is all they have here, too.
It's line an online powerpoint presentation with a bit of info and a couple of snapshots :P
It didn't matter to me either way. I was just glad I knew what floor/unit  L&D was on. That was enough for me ! hehe
