When did you get braxton hicks?

So I am 20 weeks, and I feel like I all ready am having braxton hicks. I know there isn't really anything to do for them..but is it normal to all ready be having them? My stomach tightens up real tight then I just get a major cramp and back pain with it. I know it's not an actual contraction, but this has been going on since about Saturday, it doesn't last all day, just randomly throughout the day it will do it for a while?

Re: When did you get braxton hicks?

  • I'm 24 weeks now and I started getting them about 2 weeks ago (though mine aren't accompanied by any type of cramps or back pain). They come and go, but not with any consistency. If I feel like I'm getting them a bit more frequently, I drink even more water than usual and rest if I can. It's always good to mention your BH to your OB. I mentioned mine last week at my 23w2d appt and she did a cervix check on me just to be sure nothing was happening (thankfully, I'm high and closed).

  • Mine started around 20ish weeks. Sounds normal to me.  Remember you are (on average) measuring 6-8 weeks ahead in size than a singleton mom. It's to be expected that you will feel things like BH earlier in your pregnancy.

  • Around 20 weeks.  The nurse at my initial intake said it was common to feel them earlier with twins.

  • I started getting them 18-20 weeks range.  It is normal.  You do want to be careful though - for me it usually means I am overdoing it.  I try to lay down to rest and drink some water and they go away.

This is the same for me.

  • You say you know they aren't "actual contractions," but how do you know? I was having the same thing, what I thought was occasional belly tightening from 20-21 weeks, then I found out I was having 5-10 contractions an hour that I wasn't always feeling, and that they shortened my cervix considerably in 1 week, so I was actually in Pre-term labor with pre-term contractions, but to me they felt as vague and BH-y as you describe. I was put on meds to stop contractions, and strict bedrest. It is risky to just assume they are BH, especially with twins. You need to make sure they look at your cervix for changes and confirm they are just BH. Plus, BH can turn into real contractions at any time, so you should be closely monitored.
