What do you do for heartburn?

Heartburn has been my most constant and uncomfortable symptom so far.  I have tried taking Pepcid and Zantac daily, but it just isn't enough!  Tums don't work for me either, plus I can't stand the taste right now.  What do you do for your heartburn?  I have it 24/7, so it doesn't matter what I eat, I get it anyway, so I just try to avoid acidic foods as a precaution.  If you have ay tips please let me know!!

  • Tums and drinking a lot of milk really helped me out with DS.  I am lucky to have not had it yet with #2 here.

  • I ended up having to get my dr to prescribe me something stronger for mine. Water was giving me heartburn, so I just asked and he gave me something.

YES!!! Water makes mine SO much worse... I will ask mine for something then, I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner.  Thank you!

I always thought I was crazy to think that water was giving me heartburn, but I guess I'm not the only one! It sure does make it difficult to stay hydrated.

To the OP, my doctor told me that I could take Zantac twice daily in addition to the Tums, and he recommended taking it two times a day preventatively even if I was feeling okay in the AM. I've also found that drinking soymilk helps my heartburn, as does avoiding soda. I've been trying to keep my meals small, but eat frequently, since if I get too hungry I start having acid reflux issues then as well. If none of that helps, there are some stronger prescription meds that you could talk with your doctor about.

  • I take omeprazole OTC....but if you are suffering...I know it sound gross but fills glass with water and put one tsp of baking soda....mix well and drink slowly...I usually take only five sips and my heartburn is gone

  • Right now I'm doing Tums and Pepcid. I tried Zantac and it didn't do anything. Apparently you have to "try" everything OTC before my insurance will cover a prescription. My OB said I will end up on a prescription soon.
  • I am doing Pepcid.  I actually think reflux is to blame for the coughing and raspy voice I've been sporty for the last few days - my nausea has gone from ick & blah to feeling like a sour stomach instead.  I am also starting to take it everyday in the am to prevent the blahs in the afternoon.  It seems to be worse in the afternoon/evening for me.
  • I'm taking prescription nexium (I'm in Australia not sure what it's called in the US it's a pp inhibitor) but was on that before I was pregnant. I'm also taking the liquid version of mylanta which does wonders!

  • I was having really bad HB a couple weeks ago. Like PPs I drank milk and ate Tums. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Luckily I haven't been suffering from heartburn so much as just reflux and hiccups. I hope you find some relief! Might be time to try a prescription as PPs have suggested.

Milk was the only thing that helped me with #1.  I HATE milk, but I was drinking it like there was no tomorrow toward the end of my last pregnancy.  I have been lucky thus far.
