Back carry in Ergo

I don't really post here, but I was wondering if you could help me.  DD has started to like to go on my back in the Ergo, and she's big enough that I finally feel comfortable with her being there and getting her there.  However, I feel like she's too low.  Do any of you have pictures of a baby under a year on your back in an ergo?  I'm wondering if I don't have the waist thing high enough or something.  Thanks!

Re: Back carry in Ergo

  • Ergos ride low - I keep the belt more on my hips than my waist. DS sits pretty low, but he's happy so I figure everything is fine. Just keep it snug so baby can lean out backward and it's all good. Google images has loads of photos. Smile

  • Thanks, don't know why I didn't think to look there.  I think I'm probably doing it right but I'm not used to it yet so it doesn't seem like it.  I had a mei tai with ds that he loved going on my back, but it wasn't comfortable at all for me.

One more question if anyone looks here.  When she's in front she seems to love to lean way backwards.  Since she's getting taller it doesn't go up past her shoulders anymore and it just looks so uncomfortable, but she's happy.  I can't tighten it anymore without squeezing us both to death.  Anyone else have this issue?

  • Yup, the Ergo definitely rides lower.  A mei tai will ride higher if you find lower to be uncomfortable.  But it's definitely safe.

As for the height.  Unfortunately, the Ergo is pretty small bodied relative to some other options.  As long as she's not able to lean out so much that she can sort of catapult out, it's not a safety issue (and I'd guess you'd have some time before that is an issue!).  The only problem is that that sort of leaning can be uncomfortable for the wearer since it pulls on the straps.  If you find that it becomes a problem for you (or if she starts to seem unhappy), there are taller bodied carriers out there that will still come over her shoulders.  Do make sure you are really bouncing her down in there - particularly in a back carrier.  That can sometimes buy you a few extra inches.  You can also have someone pull up on the top of the carrier once she's in for the back carry to bounce her all the way down.

  • Thanks for the advice.  Maybe I'll have to get a new one around Christmas if she's still enjoying it as much then.
