Preemies

Formula

Hello!  My son was born at 35 weeks due to me having Vasa Previa. He is now 6 weeks old, and it saddens me to say that breastfeeding is coming to an end. It isnt filling him up like it should, he's ALWAYS hungry after I feed him, even if I pump and know exactly how much he is getting.

We will be switching to formula in the next few days, ... but since he was a late term Preemie, does he HAVE to be on NeoSure, or can I put him on another formula?

Re: Formula

  • I'd talk to your pedi about it.  LO was born at 32 weeks and is on Enfamil Enfacare 22 cal.  There were other babies in the NICU that were on gentlease.

  • I have a late term preemie (just shy of 36 weeks) and we have been supplementing with Similac Advance since she was in the hospital.  She is starting to get kinda gassy the last few days but I don't know that the formula is the culprit, we'll see.

BFing has not really worked out well for us either, although I'm still trying.  My supply is very low and she pretty much slept at the boob the first month which didn't help either of us!

  • I have a late term preemie as well.  Once we stopped breastfeeding we switched to Similac Sensitive.  She was gaining weight just fine so we didn't need any higher calorie formula.

  • I have an unusually chunky 34 weeker, and her pedi is planning to have us stop fortifying around her due date. Even now, only half her feeds are fortified. Breastmilk and regular formula have the same number of calories, so if your hospital was fine with exclusively breastmilk, then it seems like regular formula would be fine too, but I would definitely talk to your pedi.

My LO was born at 35 weeks and we have been supplementing with Enfamil Enfacare 22 cal as well, starting with his stay in the NICU.

  • Like most of the mama's here have stated, I ask your pedi. My DD was born at 34w 5d and she was on neosure for 2 months. It all depends on how your LO is gaining weight.
