I plan to only get four 4oz bottles and six 8oz bottles between the twins - but we use the disposable drop-ins, so all we have to do is a quick solid wash on the nipples/rings between uses, and we're good to go. Only reason I plan on having so many extras is because they're going to be in daycare and I'll need to send spare bottles of breast milk for a few months. Once they're on formula, I'll probably cut them both down to two bottles each and swap them out to clean.

I have enough that I only have to wash bottles once a day. Babies eat every 2-3 hours in a 24 hour period x 2 babies. I received 3 sets of the dr. Brown bottles with both the 4 ounce and 8 ounce bottles and have never felt that I needed more or less.

We have 8 bottles and are washing them twice a day right now. They use about 12 bottles in 24 hours right now. (My ticker isn't updated, babies are 4 days old.)
I have 6 for each baby, they use different bottles, DS2 didn't like the cheap ones. We fill with formula and keep in the fridge. At 5 weeks old I wash bottles twice a day.
16 to begin with (assuming 2 babies will eat every 3 hours). Now we are down to 12 total because they are eating 5-6 bottles a day. Also, IMO you should not waste your money on the 5oz bottles. Just go for the larger size. When my babies bumped up to 6oz I had to go out and buy new bottles because all my 5oz ones were useless. We use Tommee Tippee bottles, so it's not like they are cheap and I ended up with 8 bottles that were useless to me at around 10 or 11 weeks.
ETA: I am way too lazy to wash bottles during the day. Also, it's usually too hectic. I just keep enough bottles that i only have to wash at night after they are asleep and then prepare them all for the next day once they are clean.
