New mom gift basket

I am putting together a new mom gift basket for a friend who is due soon. I am including some chocolates, her favorite coffee, a couple snacks...maybe a bottle of wine. I'd like to include 1 or 2 more small items, not food, that she might appreciate having all for herself with a newborn at home. Any ideas?

  • maybe some bath salts or something bath-related. i've heard that it's taking a long bath that makes you feel human again...according to my OB and various other mommy friends.

  • a good book! not baby-related, like forget the "what to expect the first year" book. or even her favorite tv show latest series on dvd.
  • A nice lotion maybe? A candle?
  • Her favorite TV series on DVD? A good quality fish oil/omega 3 supplement (for her post partum mental health). A gift certificate for house cleaning services or for her favorite take-out restaurant. A gift certificate for spa services. A subscription to a magazine about something she'll love.

I had a friend give me a subscription to a parenting magazine that was kind of nice, but after a year of that I realized I much preferred magazines more for my non-child-related interests like gardening magazines or cooking magazines. My favorite is Sunset Magazine (it's focused mainly on the West Coast though - maybe there is something similar for your region) it helps me feel creative, want to cook and reminds me I'm an adult. ;o)

  • I like the magazine idea (but I really love magazines). Maybe some little pampering things like other people suggested--make-up, nail polish, lotion, etc. If you have a Sephora near you, I find the section of small/sample sizes right by the cash is great for that kind of thing--you can give her a small container of a really nice perfume or expensive makeup she probably wouldn't buy for herself. I love that kind of stuff :)

I would love a person forever and ever if they would get/do housecleaning for me!!! Yes  Yes

I also like the ideas of reading material and/or dvd's/tv series.  Maybe netflix?  Is she a FTM?  I don't know if I'll have as much time to be reading/watching TV this time around, but those would have been great last time.  Luckily I had DD right after Christmas and was gifted almost all the seasons of Grey's Anatomy.  I would have marathons at night during my mat. leave!!  Stick out tongue

  • I like the idea of a magazine - for me I'd prefer a gossip US Weekly or People type thing. Perfect to read while pumping!

I'd stay away from bath salts (they are dangerous to have around in a house with kids) but bubbles would be nice too. Candles, IMO, are dangerous too since you are so tired you might forget to put it out. Makes me nervous.

I like the magazine idea. My favorite magazine is Real Simple.
Maybe a soft eye mask for daytime napping.

She is a FTM. I am thinking DVD set or magazine subscription over something bath related.  Know bath products can be very personal to some people.

Thank you for all the tips!

  • What a nice idea!  I definitely like the bottle of wine, candle (a nice fall smelling candle would be nice), and the DVD series.
